Best all-around racing bike?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best all-around racing bike?

If you could only have one frame for road races, crits, and TTs, what would it be and why?

You do know that you'll never achieve a consensus on this, right? Not only is every body different, and every person's preference different, but also every person has imperfect knowledge of the range of choices. Even if there were one true "best" choice, it would be impossible to know which one it is, because not everyone would have ridden it!

So, for me: a bike on which I get a team deal.

I'd be happy on a Soloist Carbon

One that I wouldn't mind breaking. If I was to get a bike dedicated for criteriums, it would probably be a decent ally frame (don't know what that might be off the top of my head) with ultegra bits and Easton Circuit wheels. Cheap-ish, decent weight, workable components.

Carbon Fiber and $8000 wheels ain't what's holding me back.

The one i've been racing and training on for the last 8 years. IF Crown Jewel. You other IF guys know what im talkning about here! It's equally adept at carving thru a Cat4 crit pack as it is doing a hilly century.

I am happy on my Soloist Carbon. Seriously, you're never going to get concensus. Just get something that fits really well, doesn't weigh too much and make sure it's well maintained. Changing wheels/tires for different events can help, and you can slap on an aero bar for TT's. I hear that training is a good idea too.

If you are looking for a RR/Crit frame, you can't go wrong with a Cannondale. Racing orientated geometry and they are really stiff.

But... since you also want to TT, I would say a Cervelo soloist carbon.

But... having a dedicated TT bike is nice. It really won't cost too much more (Cervelo Dual aluminum frames are cheap). On a TT bike, you save a lot of money by using barcons as opposed to brifters. If you already have 404's from your other bike, you won't have to buy another set of wheels (which is another big sum of money)

I built up my TT bike for around $500. (used frame, ebay cranks, 105 derailluers, barcons, wheels from my other bike, aluminum bull horns and spikes)

The one your sponsor gives you
I think the only dual purpose bike is the Cervelo Soloist. That being said - if one were to be a racer; your races would be mainly road bike oriented - so focus on that.

And the best all-around road racing frame - is not one, but all. They're all good.
You win races - not your frame.

+1. I have never ridden one, but it seems to be a great do it all bike.

Does Cervelo sponsor any amateur road teams in Nor Cal?

I gave this some thought over the summer, and ended up in a surprising place.

I bought a CR-1 frame on eBay, and the guy cracked the seat tube getting the seatpost out to ship it. It made me realize the fragility of these super-light carbon frames. He was a very good sport about taking the bike back.

I then thought about the Bianchi FG Lite and got into the questions of the fatigue cycle of aluminum. I will admit I'm a little unsure of the details, but wanted to see if there were ways to avoid the question.

I ended up on a Merlin Magia. It's a 1 kg race-specific frame that rides beautifully. Titanium seemed (to me) to be the best material to be making this investment, and I'm very happy with it.

I do have a separate time trial bike, built up on the cheap, to get me started in that discipline.

inspired choice viper, but i doubt that bike would really qualify as an 'all-around racing bike'

I know, but the original question can be considered a circular question with no real answer, so I thought why not at least one that has some history of winning behind it

One that fits.

Then I'd like a 4x more powerful engine.
