A knocking sound?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A knocking sound?

I have a Colnago Titanio (1999) and since I've owned it (a couple of months) I've heard maybe 3-4 times a "knock" sound from somewhere on the bike. It doesn't happen at any particular time...like not when I'm stressing it up a hill or right when I start off. Does anyone know what is up?

Bike stats:
Full DUra ace 9spd group
Spinergy wheelset (I know I'll change them soon)

I have had a couple of bikes that tended to break spokes. That made sort of a knocking sound or more like a guitar string snapping but lower. The old bear trap pedal on the left crank of my commute bike made a lot of knocking or tapping sounds as it broke apart over several days. As an engineer I suggest you carefully recall exactly what you were doing each time you heard the sound. Repetition of some factor will let you or a top mechanic zero in on the problem.

I'll try to figure it out but it doesn't happen often...just when I least expect it. It couldnt be spokes since my wheels don't have spokes...

Check with the previous owners. It could be haunted.

It could be a spider's nest in the downtube! Get it out of your house immediately!!

Seriously, something is likely hitting something. Or possibly, two metal surfaces are rubbing.
You might have to dismantle it piece by piece to find it though.

Best case scenario is that you have a ball with a bad spot on a ball bearing where it normally runs fine and occasionally gets into a bad orientation causing it to momentarily bind. Do you feel any additional resistance just before you hear the "knock"?
