Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

105 9-speed to 10-speed

What is involved from switching my 105 9-speed to a 10-speed?

edit: please don't ask why i want to do this or that, i just want to know what is involved in getting more junk in the trunk.

Can I use any shimano 10-speed compatible shifters, or must they be 105 (assuming I get a 105 cassette)? Do I have to get a 105 cassette for that matter?

chain / RD / cassette / rear brifter.

depending on your chainrings, you may also need to change them. i use DA 7800 cranks/rings with DA 7700 9 speed chain and FD fine though. FD will probably still be ok.

Shifters, cassette, chain, and bar tape. The old derailleurs should be fine, at least worth a try.
Any 10-speed Shimano road cassette will work.

actually, they are right. you don't really need to change the RD at all.

My current 9-speed RD is compatible with a 10-speed casette?

Ultegra, Dura-Ace, and 105 10-speed shifters will all work. You don't have to get a 105 cassette.

The deal with the chainrings is that the spacing between them and width of the chain is different. A 10-speed chain can (potentially) slip down in between the chainrings and lock the crank, but IMHO this isn't really much of a possibility if everything is set up correctly and you're not cross-shifting all the time. If you're super worried about that, you could even just file down the spacers between the rings to get the narrower 10-speed spacing with a 9-speed chainring set.

there is no indexing in the RD so it should be fine. i use 10 speed RD on a 9 speed cassette and its perfect.

Most of the newer Shimano stuff is 9- and 10-speed compatible. You'll have a part number on the back of the RD - check the shimano website for specs. I know because I'm making this upgrade as we speak - I had some unfortunate circumstances which rendered my 9 speed shifters unuseable so I seized the opportunity to upgrade.

Best of luck.

Why might you have to change the chainrings? Different width chain? One of the things I've noticed since I made the upgrade is the chain is somewhat noisy on the big ring. Is this symptomatic of needing new rings?

Assuming you're not making a huge jump in cassette range (i.e. switching from an 11-23 9 speed cassette to a 12-29 10 speed cassette), it's fine.

hmmm.... would it be incredibly un-OCP of me to have a left 105 shifter and a right DA shifter? lol

Oh, and I'm going from an 12-25 to an 11-23 or an 11-25

I'll play the part of the poor college student here. Can I have your old 105 shifters (providing they're useable)?

Ok, so what I think I'm going to do is find an 11-25 or 12-25 cassettee and a new right shifter. I'm debating whether I should get a 105 lever or just suck it up and get a pair of Ultegra's or DA's...

Be advised - The shimano 9 spd hoods are different than the shimano 10 spd hoods. Quite a bit different. If you only upgrade your right shifter, your hoods won't match. I can here the OCP criticism now...
