Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Seagull Century death toll continues (BB Squeak)...

Some of you may remember my saga (the Beef even drew a cartoon)...

I rode the Seagull Century, at the rest stop at Assateague, the wind blew my bike over into a bunch of sand, which was everywhere. For the rest of the ride (~38 miles) my BB was squeaking, my left STI lever was hosed and my cleats were so caked with sand I could barely clip in.

A few hundred bucks in parts (with some "might as well" upgrades) I'm rolling again and can utilize my brakes and gears. However, the squeak at the BB endures. It doesn't squeak (that I can hear) under load but when not under load (backpedaling) it squeaks pretty bad.

I pulled the cranks and the BB today - I have a Truvativ (gigapipe) sealed BB on my Trek 1500 - there is a ring on the non-drive side that squeaks really badly. I can't seem to alleviate the squeak - and I've WD-40d it and regreased the hell out of it.

Here's (hopefully) a picture of the BB. The ring in question is towards the left of the image just inside the black cup. Is this serviceable or am I now in the market for a new BB as well?

Try reposting in the bicycle mechanics forum on this site, they would be able to help you better.

Yeah - it was a last resort. It was squeaking anyway and I couldn't get it to stop. I gave it one last shot to flush out the sand or grit or whatever inside.

PS - it's not ALWAYS bad medicine. It's a great penetrator, cleaner and flushing agent. NOT A LUBRICANT which is where most people misuse/misunderstand it.

sealed cartridge BB most likely going to have to be replaced... i feel your pain. the seagull destroyed the cartridge bearings in both my front and rear hubs.

Sloth -

I had to replace my shifters (which I went ahead and upgraded from 105 to Ultegra) and my BB. In upgrading my shifters, I also ended up having to change the chainrings and cassette (neither of which hurt to bad as they were fairly cheap upgrades).

As much as it sucks for us, I'm glad I'm not the only one! What got you? I'm assuming the Assateague rest area?

Needless to say, I won't be doing the Seagull next year.

The WD in WD-40 stands for Water displacer w/ forty recommended uses. it is not a lube. but it's great for rust prevention. I would only use it on a bike maybe on steel bolts and cables to keep from rusting if you do a lot of rain rides. but triflow or other bike lubes work for this as well.

I stopped riding the Seagull century, I thought as a favor to others because every time I ride it, It pours all day. but I guess if the rain dosen't get you the sand will.

So you're saying that the century ride is to blame for your bike falling over?

That's some convulated logic.

Wow.

No - what I was saying is that I won't be riding the seagull. Here's why since we need it spelled out:

1) route planning - The wind is notoriously bad on Assateague Island in October. This is a yearly phenomenon. There is sand on Assateague Island. Lots of it. There should NOT be a rest stop there.
2) My bike blowing over isn't the issue. My bike blowing over and into the aforementioned sand due to the aforementioned routeplanning is.
