Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are you doping?

Are you doping?

I wish that people could post anonymously, because I would really like to know what percentage of cyclists are using performance enhancers: epo, growth hormone, or anabolic steroids. I had to have a talk about steroids with my 12 year old son who plays football!!! His teammates were talking about them in the locker room!! If they are so wide spread that 12 year olds talk about them, it makes me wonder about my sport.

Well, we are anonymous.. kind of. I mean this certainly isn’t my real name. And the poll options on this forum are anonymous enough. I have no idea if all performance enhancing drugs are this expensive, but in this article some of the drugs he used cost thousands of dollars for just a few months of use, so perhaps doping hasn't reached the weekend warriors

Oh, you meant steroids! Nope, don't need a peter any smaller than I have already! (Hey, never said I was politically correct!)

My understanding from recent immigrants from western Europe is that doping among teenage bike racers in Europe is just a widespread as doping among teenage football players in the USA. Most Americans, however, have no aspirations of becoming pro bike racers, so there is no serious motivation to dope.

Having spent the 2006 season on the pro circuit let me quote one " THEY'RE ALL ON THE JUICE "
I was a support person, and each racer had their own 'formula'. Of course a large percentage
is over the counter, however when I asked the racer to elaborate I got an evasive answer
"welcome to the real world".
Any protein based enhancer can be beat with an item you or I could
buy in any grocery store. ( *not gonna give it up )
Personally towards the end of the season, I had a real bad incident with poison Ivy and ended up in
the emergency room with my face so swollen I could not see. They shot me up with roids, handed
me a bottle of pills and said, "take six a day for a week, five a day the next week" and so on and so on
until one a day.
Those first two weeks I was a wild man on the bike.
I can see just how easy it could be to fall into it.

Performance enhancing drugs? No, not unless you count my meds for HTN and high cholesterol. I did take a Celebrex yesterday, however...

Seriously, though...when I was 12 years old, my little league football coach gave me and several other team members two ephedrine (or some such) pills before a game. Told us they were "sugar pills". Didn't help, though...we still lost. This was quite a long time ago, as I'm now 35.

I remember people from high school using steroids a few years ago. Not in a cycling context. I've heard that EPO is just lying around heart centers, and that it's not that hard to get.

Why would we (most of us anyway) .... who are in no danger of winning more than a token prize at a local race .... do something as stupid as using steroids??? What would be the point of ruining our health and lives to win a waterbottle from a local sponsoring bicycle shop, or the $10 kitty?

I don't know about most people here, but I'm given a truck-load of waterbottles for free each year from the different events I participate in, and if I am in that desperate a need for $10, I'll just put in a bit of extra time at work.

I had written a long story about a ride this past summer involving a STRONG old-school (gin) Martini and going on a (small) group ride, but it sounded too much like R600DuraAce's schtick that I decided not to post it. He might have some sort of copyright protection. If there is an outpouring of pleas for the story I will post it. I'm pretty sure that one of the other riders on that ride posts to BF on occasion, but I doubt that he knew that I was gin powered at the time.

I have heard stories about low-level racers buying EPO designed for the Vet trade (cats and dogs) on-line and I'm not even involved in the racing scene.

Performance enhancing drugs are very pro-American! Even (former) Senator and WW II war hero Dole hawks Viagra and what could be more American than that!

I am a vitamin taking fool, I eat right, I train hard (as much as I can with wife and 3 kids), I would still only consider myself an average cyclist. I have always been taught that hard work is what builds a 'man'. I guess it just shocked me that my 12 year old already is facing the decision whether or not to use something to "enhance his performance", Jesus he is 12!!!! We are talking about small town America junior high football, not college, or the NFL. I was just wondering how many of 'us' have chosen to use something.

Yes. I can't stand losing during club rides, so I have been using EPO. It's pretty cool.

No, of course not.

As Jimmy from Southpark once said: "Steroids are for wussies."

I take;

1x Men's multi-vitamin
1x protein/carb (sustagen or musashi) recovery drink usually only after a century ride

[+] The occassional powerbar
[+] the occassional high quality beer on a weekend or after meals
[+] plenty of vegies, fish and oats.

I used to drink many protein shakes when I was younger weight training and tried creatine monohydrate a couple of times but then decided it was a waste of time and risk to ones health. I knew people taking horse steroids, getting heart palpitations and a couple of other disorders that came with it, also heard someone ruined their kidneys. I didn't touch the stuff just to be on the safe side, didn't see a point as it was suppossed to be health beneficial and not the reverse and now I don't bother with buckets of protein shakes either. I just make a couple of nice sandwiches and a tea, and that suffices for me.

I went to college on an athletic scholarship (swimming) and picked up cycling after that. I never did a single drug, vitamin, or anything else becasue I believed/knew that I was special. Other athletes were always stronger, faster, taller, etc. and I beat all of them... why couldn't I beat a doper?

The other thing that kept me out of drugs was perspective. My parents constantly hounded me about the long-term aspects of my training, lifestyle, spending habits, studies, driving strategies, etc.

I now coach a college cycling team and regularly use quotes from the movie "The Matrix" to drive this point home. "The Matrix can't tell you who you are, Neo." "Don't try to cend the spoon... Instead recognize the truth: there is no spoon."
