Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The new Raleigh 700 Ultegra (pics)

Four-hundred bucks.

I love Craigslist!

One of my best friends has always expressed interest in getting into road biking - but I knew a sweet road bike with make for the greatest motivation. Enter the Seattle Craigslist. After weeks of obsessive-compulsive, zombie-eyed browsing, I happened upon a short text ad. There wasn't a picture, and it didn't mention a year. All I deduced was that it was a lady who had to get rid of her 54 cm Raleigh road bike that day, and she needed $400. Oh, and it was equipped with Ultegra.

I didn't know if it was old Ultegra 600, a steel frame, or what. I just had a feeling I should go check it out, so I called up my friend and we drove down there.

She was very friendly, in her mid-20s most likely. She had done triathlons and was currently working two jobs. Her biggest issue of the moment was needing to pay her rent, so the road bike had to go.

And when she brought it out - wow. My mouth fell open. It was a 2001 Raleigh R700, aluminum frame with a carbon fork, Ritchey seatpost/stem, and a full Ultegra 6500 drivetrain.

My friend and I each took it for a spin. He got back out of breath and with a big grin on his face. We paid the lady - she even threw in a Cateye Enduro 8, a seatpack, mini-pump, two pairs of silver Ultegra SPD pedals, a patch kit, and a multi-tool. Both of us thanked her, and we loaded the bike up.

What a great buy.

Great buy! But does anyone know if Raleigh still makes good road bikes? I haven't seen them in the mainstream lately.

PS: What's with the Eclipse pockets?

Raleigh's been a little out of the picture lately, yes. I believe their newest headquarters are right here in Seattle - we have a sweet local Raleigh dealer called Recycled Cycles complete with a Raleigh racing team. There's a little paragraph about them in the front of the 2006 Raleigh catalog.

The gum art is just a little something I decided to do with all the Eclipse gum I was chewing. Thought it looked kinda neat.

Raleigh is back. They're making some really fine bikes now (again), especially at the high end, and since the rep got a little stale the prices are decent - particularly on the used market.

Great purchase on the bike!!! It looks super clean too. Anyway, your friend will love his Raliegh. I just got one a couple months ago and I LOVE it. Were are you guys at Beef? I'm here in Kenmore just a 100 yards from the Burke trail....
