Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

'are you calling me fat??'

Lances interview with runners world......

In cycling, you focused on the Tour every year. Is there anything specific that's motivating you to run? Well, did you see Greg LeMond on the Today show yesterday? [LeMond, who won three Tours before retiring in 1994, has been a vocal critic of Armstrong's and appeared on television to discuss Floyd Landis's positive drug test.] That was mean. But kidding aside, I would rather be a 35-, 40-, or 45-year-old normal, fit guy. I don't want to be another retired athlete who's 50 pounds overweight, has a poor lifestyle, drinks too much, doesn't exercise.

Now i think lance is a great athletic who's done alot for the sport.....but i really like lemond and i find it a tad immature armstrong would take a jab at him like that...sure lemonds put a few pounds on, but you know what? he's lemond and he can do whatever he damn well pleases. lemond is one of the greatest cyclists of all time who has a real passion for his sport: and that includes the negative effects of doping. I don't think lemond has ever taken a swip at armstrong outside of that context. Kudos to lances work with cancer and all but he's still a prick.

So Lance can say that LeMond takes too many drugs?

Come on let Lance have his jabs. Lemond takes about 200 jabs a year at him.

So it's OK for Greg to publicly accuse Lance of being a doping cheat - which has never been proven, but not for Lance to acknowledge the obvious fact that Greg has gained a few pounds?

LeMond said he never knew if lance had doped or not, just that he found it suspicious (as do more than a few people), and he spoke of it in the greater context of doping in the sport, which i think is a noble thing considering that so few are willing to come out and speak their minds on the subject. lance is just pissy because not everyone reveres him like a god, and i stand by my 'prick' comment.

Lance never said LeMond was a lardass, he just said that he saw Greg on the Today show, and Lance drew new inspiration from LeMond to continue to stay fit.

come on guys, he doesn't stand alone, just most of the lance-haters must be in bed already.

i for one don't really have an oppinion on lance's personality; he's good some days but i'm sure he has b!tchy days too, just like all of us. also, i thought it was a funny joke about lemond. i don't mind lemond either though.

cheers

I don't know, personally I think they are both acting kind of bratty by publicly calling each other out all the time. That of course is just my opinion, which doesn't need to be shared by anyone else, but come on, they're both grown men.

Lance is a prick, i don't like him, i liked Miguel Indurain better. Lance should shut his mouth, just because he's pissed off that he has one testicle doesn't mean that he should take it out on others.
Wtf is up with him being called a hero for surviving cancer and making a comeback? Ok, 7-time consecutive Tour winner, that's an amazing feat, but surviving Testicular Cancer is not.
i'm not an oncologist, but i can argue that Testicular Cancer is almost as treatable as skin cancer
ie. it's one of the most easily curable cancer out there

You should have left it alone after the first sentence, because once you let yourself go on about TC, you started to become a lot like the Lance that you describe.

Well, I'll be honest and say I am a Lance fan. Let's put that aside though. How can you possibly say that beating TC is not an amazing thing? It spread to his lungs and his brain. ANY kind of cancer is amazing to beat. It's people like you that think that it isn't that aren't helping us get to any cures anytime soon. Every kind of cancer can be very dangerous.

Why dont they just set up a UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) match on
Pay-per-view, winner take all! I'll take Lance in the later rounds when Lemond
is winded.

This could very well but the dumbest post I have ever read out here. Hands down, without question.

I know the doctor that cured him ten years ago. Ten years ago, the cure that they used was very new and since the patient waited and waited before going to the doctor, they gave him a 20% chance.

As a person who has had two people in his family die before 50, between them leaving seven children, I find it stunning that anyone could be this stupid.

Tell ya what...we'll run you through a couple rounds of chemo...then you can spend days on your hands and knees puking your guts out and praying to God that it will stop, and you can tell us all what a walk in the park this is.

Ever sat and held the head of a chemo patient, someone in your family, while they throw up and watch their hair come out in clumps? I have.

You sir, are the prick.

roadwarrior: I think pcates is prolly referring to tc in its early stages, and thus meant no disrespect to the tragedy of your personal situation. Perhaps he's not a pr*ck then but i think LA does kinda come off as one for the personal jab about another man's physical appearance, as well as a perceived lack of respect (where would LA be today without GL's accomplishments for the sport?) to someone who apparently won his tdf's with more psychological difficulty (first american, "traitor" teammates, etc.) than he did.
GL was talking about cheating, which tho can be perceived as a personal affront by LA, is really about the rules of the sport, which LA supposedly responded to with personal threats, now this jab. imo GL made the more defensible remarks.
btw, i'm not a lance-hater, he's one of the greatest athletes ever, period. I hope he's clean, but in the back of my mind i dunno... I am reminded of the vociferous denials of marion jones and barely bonds ("i thot the 'clear' was ben-gay")...

Sorry about your losses

He said pretty much the same thing without naming names in an ESPN interview: https://sports.espn.go.com/oly/cyclin...t&lid=tab3pos2

I didn't want to, after so many years of professional and competitive sports, not to name names, but I didn't want to be the typical professional athlete, where the tendency is to get lazy and sedentary and not doing anything. Especially those first couple years. I didn't want that for my life. It's not good for my health and I don't want to be a 40-year-old 50 pounds over weight. Now, on Sunday, I'll be like every other 35-year-old guy in the field who has an hour a day to exercise, has kids to tend to, business to take care of and drinks a beer or two every night. My publicist is giving me the finger, joking that maybe I should add a zero to that. In many ways, I'm just an average dude, like so many of the other runners out there.
I wonder what people would think if he would have used Merckx as an example instead of LeMond.
