wtf... dude was going 60mph behind a semi? I mean, ugh.
</rant> |
In the small ring, no less.

Artistic license. I'm also not quibbling about Johnny Lee Miller's "poor form" in The Flying Scotsman. :p

What about Dupree's form while he was leading the pack in "You, Me & Dupree"? http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/7518/dupree3fz6.jpg He was pedaling in his instep, all the while kicking butt and taking names :D |
Reportedly, the stunt man really was doing 50+ in the long shot. That is not very far fetched; motor paced bicyclists can go a lot faster. The closeup is a well known technical error.

Did about 25 miles today, the temp hit 27 so the toes were a little cold at the end. |
So how did they shoot the close up then? Had him tied to a rope behind the truck or something?

</rant> Lots of dump trucks/semis/military vehicles around here, and in a draft it's not at all uncommon to hover around 50 for a little bit. Unsafe as all hell, but not impossible or all that hard... |
And a little extra terrestrial really got seperated from his mothership and made a bike fly...

"The fastest speed achieved on a bicycle was 204.73 kph (127.243 mph), by Jose Meiffret (France), July 16, 1962, on the German Autobahn from Freiburg, behind a car"

Encyclopedia Britannica. Volume V. Chicago: Encyclopedia Britannica, 1984 John Howard might have something to say about that......although doing it behind a car on the highway is just as impressive... http://www.canosoarus.com/08LSRbicycle/LSR%20Bike01.htm |

That's a great scene. Def. worth a rental...

I think in an ideal situation, like having some sort of a hill and a massive tt ring, drafting a semi at 60 would be doable for a short while. |
Here is the youtube link of breaking away.. The cutaways to the legs and small ring are priceless.

I drafted a firetruck once when I was on an charity ride and it couldn't get around a bunch of cyclist in
front of it. Fortunately it wasn't in a hurry and just kind of hung out doing 30 mph or so. Boy, it never felt so easy to go so fast!!!! it was AWESOME! |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdg91Z0VgDw 1. There are two closeups of his crankset while he is drafting the truck. He is in the big ring in the first (40mph) closeup, but in the small ring in the second (50mph) closeup. 2. In some of the frontal views (where you can see the actor's face), he is pedalling less than half as fast as he would need to go 60mph. Still, I think this is one of the best scenes in the movie, and this is the best US-made bicycling movie ever. |
Anyone have a torrent or download link for the whole movie?
