Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Winter Tires, opinions please

Ok, so I am moving back to Tahoe for the winter. And I was wondering what tires people recommend for not the cleanest roads? I doubt, I will train outdoors when there is snow on the roads, but it is sunny 90% of the time so my real concern is not sliding out on sand and pebbles. Opinions from all y'all mountain town folks greatly appreciated.

What type of bike and what kind of riding? If you are doin the roadie thing, the conti's mentioned are a good choice, if you are touring and your bike can handle the wider schwalbes, they are also a good choice. Conti contacts and top contacts are also good choices for a compromise between the two.

I am riding a FUJI Carbon Team frame. I have used the conti grand prixs before nice tires. So, I am assuming the main thing is to get off of the 23c's.

The main thing is to get something grippy and flat-resistant. A little wider might help, but seriously, sand, gravel and such are not specific to that area only...if you're used to 23s and staying on pavement, going wider isn't that big of an issue. If you are going off pavement, wider will help.

I like Conti Ultra Gatorskins (with the Kevlar bead). Just curious, anyone know the difference between the gatorskins and the 4 seasons?

Roadies around here tend to switch to Conti Contacts...that is what I am running on my Commuter year round and they are pretty nice with a bit of tread. It wont get it done in the ice but a bit of snow and slush they will handle just fine.

The 4 Seasons are lighter...and supposedly grip the road a bit better with lower rolling resistance. Don't know how true the second part is or if it's worth the price difference. I think the flat protection is quite similar.

I wish I could just save a macro on my computer with a generic positive comment about Michelin Krylion carbons so I could save time typing it in all 9 of the "best off-season tire" threads.

Why not just save it as text and use the ole copy/paste? Is this what they taught you in med school...use an artificial heart to cure a case of heartburn?

Of course a bot that would scan each thread and automatically post a response based on keyword phrases would be cool.

When the roads are clear my 700 x 23c tires are fine. When they're not I ride an MTB with knobbies. There's not too much in between. You're not exactly going to stay upright because you're on a 28c tire vs. a 23c tire if you hit an icy or snowy patch in my opinion. If you're going to ride road tires on a bicycle in conditions like that tie a giant pillow to your ass, because you're going down. I've done it.

Knobbies, poindexter, knobbies.
