So what's left in your wallet?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So what's left in your wallet?

As the year grinds to an end someone asked me if I'm really saving any cash by ditching a car and cycling for both recreation and commuting. I gave the standard answer (heck ya!) but was left doing a mental tally. It was kinda shocking.

So how much have you spent on bicycling stuff (bikes and bike specific products) this year?

Bike: about $400. Rollers, Shoes, Pedals, Pump, Tubes, Gatorade, Saddle, Jersey.

As to my car, I've spent $550 on gas, and about $50 on oil changes. Oh, and $60 for a new tire.

I put about 5 times as many miles on the car as the bike, just for reference.

about $800 spread out over almost 14,000 miles and that includes a new work bike, way less than what it used to cost me to have a car

I've spent

200 - used bike
150 wheelset
150 tires, tubes etc. for 2 bikes
150 seat, pedals (2 pr)
150 misc. pump, lights, etc
$800

In a year, and gained 2 sweet bikes ( a 90's Allez Sport for long rides and touring, and a 80's Raleigh capri Fixed Conversion for my commute).

Money WELL spent. I shouldn't have to spend as much next year...

$3600 spent between a road bike a mountain bike plus another 300 for accessories. All this on a summer job really hurts the bank but next year I won't be spending as much. I can't really afford to spend that much again.

Sadly, even without buying a bike this season (rare), I managed to still spend around 2,500CND. Consumables add up fast: tires, tubes, helmet, gloves, shorts, etc. I also get wasteful: CO2, using premium rubber all the time, gels, drinks, recovery potions. Furthermore, that number doesn’t include all the extra food I had to eat or race entry fees. On a cost per calorie basis, gas is cheaper than food; but you can’t live on gas.

Side-note commuting by bicycle is not truly emission free. You know, those carbohydrates end up as greenhouse gas and the nitrogen in the protein ends up causing eutrophication of freshwater systems. Transportation is never free, but at least you are not transporting 1,000 pounds of plastic and Al everywhere… only 25lbs.

Not much considering my stable. I ride my bikes for 10 years or more. I maintain them myself, and I buy cheap parts that work well. I'm probably under $500/year. I easily save that in commuting.

Cars are damn expensive. I've thought (quite seriously) about selling mine and going to a cheap beater car and my bikes.

2006 totals, through November:
- fuel: $1181.20
- loan: $4251.94
- oil: $106.76
- other: $4390.12 (summer tires, winter tires, timing belt, water pump, labor, brakes, etc., etc.)
- total: $9930.02

Once December factors in, I will just clear the $10,000 mark. That's for about 10-12k miles. That's pricey.

In comparison, I've purchased two bikes this year, worked on an old one, purchased a good deal of clothing, rollers, etc. I don't have an exact total, but would estimate it at $5-6k. No purchases were made before July... but since July, I've ridden about 3000 miles. So far, the bikes are more expensive per mile, but next year that differential will change drastically as the major equipment has already been paid for.

That is, of course, if I can hold off from the impulse to buy a new bike, even though I have absolutely no reason to justify it other than want.

EDIT: I forgot car insurance. I won't even bother posting the amount, but uh... that closes the gap a bit, too.

Probably $4,000-$5,000. That should be substantially less in 2007 as I've pretty much purchased all the clothing/accessories I need. I've saved up a little more than half of what I'll need for a new bike and I should have that bike within the next couple months. I'll buy new tires, handlebars, pedals, and thumb shifters for that bike and after that I don't want to make more purchases unless it's necessary.

low 5 figures. I'm thinking I'm around $2 a mile. Heck, the Porsche, even considering depreciation, isn't as expensive on a per mile basis.

And bike related travel is allocated to my wife's travel extravagances, not my bike habit.

I ride "vintage" (i.e. not expensive) bikes I buy at thrift stores and off craigslist. I've actually come out ahead this year by fixing up and selling bikes. I get the feeling like I'm not the typical cyclist. In perspective, I don't do much serious riding other than commuting every day and getting around town.
