I'm not sure what planet a 65 gram difference comes out to half a pound, but it's sure not Earth.

Fulcrum Racing 3's Vs. Mavic Ksyrium Elite

Just as the title says, which should I get? Bot wheels are so similar I cant decide! I can get them both for around the same price, so thats a non issue. I'm probably going to be using these for racing and training, but not on crappy days, as I have cheap backups for that. Help!

Mavic Ksyrium Elite

Fulcrum Racing 3

I realy dont know. They have a pair of Elites in the shop, and they are sexy, but I havent seen the Fulcrums in first person. The Fulcrums are definetly more esoteric.

Tough choice. The Fulcrums are lighter... about a half pound lighter. That's a lot. I have Elites and the one thing I can tell you about them is that they're bombproof. Hope that helps.

Doc,
I was going by the specs on my Elites (which are 2004, I think). They weigh 1850g which is a 200g difference, or approximately a half a pound. I guess they lightened them up and I was not aware of that. Peace out.

Fulcrum 3's. I'd put the Elites in the same class as the 5's.

Can't beat Campy hubs.

Ahh. I see... That's a pretty big difference. Mavic really shaved some weight off those.

After 6 months use my opinion is that Elites aren't very good. The bad points so far:

1. They flex a lot when sprinting
2. They go out of true easily
3. They roll slowly (they sped up as the bearings ran in but they're still slow)
4. They're expensive to fix
5. They're nasty in a crosswind (this applies to lots of wheels)
6. They're fairly heavy

Sounds like others like them a lot but I'm disappointed in mine. YMMV.

Now granted, I have the Racing 1's, but I've been really happy with them. The quality/fit/finish are amazing, They accelerate great, they're nice and stiff without being too harsh, and crosswinds aren't bad at all despite the aero spokes. Very impressed with Fulcrum so far.

Another set I was looking at are the Real Design Ultrasphere's. 1365 grams for the pair. Some love them, some hate them, so I'm still thinking about it.

1. How heavy are you? Are you over 200?
2. Put close to 10000mi on mine, never trued them once and they are perfectly true.
3. Your hubs are probably not adjusted properly.
4. YES
5. As you said, this applies to lots of aero wheels.
6. YES, mine are.

6. YES, mine are.
1. 85kg (187lb)
2. They went out of true on a small pothole the size of which I have hit many times on other wheels (I've actually hit that same one a few times with other wheels) with no problems. They were almost unrideable afterwards. Not good for a robust training wheel.
3. I wasn't aware of this but I'll look into it. Thanks for the heads up on this.

1. OK. So do a lot of wheels not made specially for that discipline.
With a low spoke count and a light rim that's what you get

2. One of the reason the easily go out of true is that
they're rather poorly build. As is the rest of the ksyriums.
Get them tensioned right and they hold up much better

6. That is true. They're about 1785 grams

Hey. BDG. You're in to yellow right?
I'm lacing up a few sets of these right now.

1275 grams and VERY stiff. (Not tensioned yet)
I believe they would look good on you bike.

It's true. I switch my Fulcrum out for K-ES when I want stealth in the neighbourhood.

I dislike mine too. The nipples seized after 4 months and can never be trued again.

Hi.

I realize this is a very old thread but I have a similar question regarding the latest versions of the same wheels and thought it was better to revive this than to create a new.

I'm picking up my new bike next week and it come with the last version of the black Ksyrium elite. I've been given the possibility to have them replaced by fulcrum racing 3 for an extra 30 €.

If they both looked exactly the same (just to put aesthetics aside) which one would you choose and why?

The owner of the bike shop basically said they were pretty much the same, quality-wise, but that he has much more confidence in the ksyrium since he's been selling them for a much longer time compared to the fulcrum. Of course he also tried to sell me the racing 1 set, but that's out of the equation for now.

Thanks in advance
