Ride today on the BRP - with pics

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ride today on the BRP - with pics

It was another nice day, in the low 60s in town, so I decided to do my tempo ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway out of Balsam Gap. The temp when I started was 56 degrees and it was mid 40s at the top. The ride starts at an elevation of 3360' and ends atop Waterrock Knob at a visitor center at 5820' in 8.7 miles. When the days are longer I often start in town at 2000' for about 18 miles up to the summit.

Getting ready to ride.

At the gate. I had the road completely to myself.

I rode tempo to the top and took the rest of the pictures on the way down. This ride is great in the cooler months as it is in the sun most of the way up.

Looking West at Smoky Mtn. NP from the Waterrock Knob parking lot.

Looking East towards Pisgah national Forest from the same parking lot.

The road less traveled, for today at least.

View going into a curve.

Some high elevation NC views.

Ice in the shade made it cold.

It was a spectacular day.

More views from the descent.

Taken on the bike at 30 mph going into the corner..

Last picture looking across towards the high point on the Parkway.

It was another great day alone on this awesome road. The weather for the next week looks to be warm so I hope to make it up there again.

I can't believe you get to ride on a closed road like that. Stupid population density and vertically challenged geography of Massachusetts.

Is the road always closed at this time of the year? You don't run afoul of the rangers by riding on the closed road? It looks just great! About every other summer we vacation near Tsali and I ride my mtn bike. I'd love to hit some of those roads on my road bike - when they're closed! Whoo-hoo!

The road is closed when conditions warrant, however it looked to be in good shape today. Sometime ice remains in the tunnels and forces the closure when the rest of the way is fine. You can ride the Parkway in the summer obviously and if you avoid the busy holidays the traffic is light.

It is legal to ride the closed road, but sometimes they close it to all when there is a slide or other damage to the road itself.

Nice pictures; the one at 30 mph is good.

If the days were longer, I'd be tempted to head over there for a ride.

Dude, you are making me go nuts, I wanna go there so bad and its only 4 hours from here. Can you post a routeslip profile of your route? Absolutely stunning pics by the way, my feet are rolling the cranks in my mind as of now, I have this incredible urge to get in the saddle and climb.
