Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ebay Listing

So I was browsing Ebay and came across someone selling 06 54 CAAD8 frame with Premium fork. Starting bid is 550 with buy now of 600. An ok price. Anyway the listing really bugs the hell out of me.
First this "the fork is all carbon fiber from the steer tube to the drop outs", you can clearly see in the pictures that drop outs are aloy.
Then there is this "Size is 54 CM, perfect for a rider about 5' 6"". I am 5' 9.5" And this frame was a great fit for me. I think it would be to big for someone 5'6".
Nothing really obvious that indicate that the post is a scam, just those couple things that kind of bug me.

Well look at this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/2005-LEMOND-FULL...QQcmdZViewItem

Lets see, that frame looks exactly like a 2004 Arrivee Ti, so not a 2005 and it was available to the public. However they didn't make an all Ti bike in 2005 for public sale but perhaps they made a few on the side for some racers, so I suppose it could be a 2005. The Tete De Course was the spine design starting in 2003 not 2004 as stated, and Saturn disbanded at the end of 2003 so the stickers are just somebody posing. But the biggest issue is there is a Reynolds 853 decal on it. It certainly looks like Ti and looks exactly like the 2004 tianium Arrivee. But why would someone put a 853 decal on it? That just screams fake/scam/knock-off/or idiot. And of course the price is too high.

You do the same thing I do when I buy stuff from ebay: read the text and look at the pictures carefully. If I have questions, I ask them before I bid. I'm amazed at the number of people that will bid and send money to someone whose ad has poor or erroneous information, and then complain when they get screwed.

Thats the thing I am not sure what to ask. Should I point out the obvious mistakes?

Well, technically the fork is all carbon TO the dropouts, not through the drop outs.

Check out his recently purchased items. A bunch of D/A components and a Kestrel Evoke frameset for $750.

Ah English so wonderfully ambiguous. "From steer" inclusive "TO drop outs" none inclusive.

Yes and anything else you can think of. When you get the answers, if it's too good to be true or if it feels wrong, pass. Ebay and Craigslist have taught me patience. If I miss buying an item, another will show up.

"and send money to someone whose ad has poor or erroneous information" or as is more often the case intentionally fails to mention some important issue like the steerer tube length of a fork. There are 10 dishonest sellers on ebay for every 1 dishonest buyer. Hoping some deewb comes along to buy a fork that was cut to 4 inches that no one can use is a dishonest seller.

Are you people serious? Ebay is caveat emptor. Everything in a sellers description, if not explicitly stated or if in some way not clear is to be cleared up through ASKING QUESTIONS.

If you bid thinking the onus is on the seller to provide all the details you are looking for then that is your fault. How is any of this news.

Just sent an e-mail about the Reynolds sticker on the Ti frame. We'll see...

STAY AWAY - STAY AWAY

The seller of that Lemond (Velodeal) has 100% positive on 181 feedbacks. But he never responded to my question why there is a Reynolds 853 decal and not a Ti decal or the errors with his year listings. He obviously got the message though, because he edited his pictures so that there is no longer a close-up of both sides of the frame so you can't make out the 853 decal. Hmmm, so I guess the answer to my question was to hide the evidence.

In my book, all that equals a SCAM. Clearly is he hoping some sucker will come along.
Somebody else should ask the same thing about the 853 decal to keep bugging him with that, and then ask for the frame serial number.

+1 - I haven't heard back about the 853 question that I asked. Auction pictures were definitly changed though.
