Moots build, need help
 

I have enough for my VaMoots frame. I will prob order it right after the Holidays. I found a great VaMoots build that I am using for my inspiration. The set-up colors will be the natural moots Ti finish and Chris King Blue similar to the photo. My question is regarding the wheel build. What wheels should I use?? Thinking about possibly using OpenPro's laced to the blue Chris King Hubs?? Any suggestions? I am 6', 180lbs. Try to get 2-3k miles in per year. Mostly rides on texas chipseal roads. Some group rides, some centuries, but mostly solo rides 40-60miles out in the country.

You could always find a set of the blue Open Pros, or the blue CXP33 rims.
I looked through my personal bike porn folder at the Moots (which included that photo), and if adding color I will say blue goes well with Ti. Be careful over overkill though. Silver looks good with Ti.

That's a sweet looing Moots, if yours turn out that nice you're going to be a very happy guy. How about blue Velocity Aeroheads?

I would go with blue King hubs ( you just can't beat King hubs!!!) and silver Open Pros or Velocity Aeroheads.

If you are thinking about buying the Moots stem and seapost, check the prices and forums at moots.com first. The stem is $340(:eek: !!!) and seatpost is $185. That's some serious money for a seatpost and stem (especially the stem). Also, I have seen a lot of complaints on the forum regarding the seatpost's clamp.

Anyway, that bike is definitely a beautiful build. The blue king headset looks great on that frame.

Yeah, the price is high for the stem and post, but damn they look good:rolleyes: . I already have a Thomson Elite post and road stem in silver that I will initially put on it, but someday will get the moots.

I second the blue King hubs with silver OP.

Blue King hubs would be fantastic. If its in your budget, sure. For me, I'd probably go with the look in the picture...blue sidewall tires. They would look good with silver or black rims and hubs, and you could change the look any time you wanted with a new set of tires.

But yeah, the King hubs would look great...

I went with red on my Vamoots SL. Also went the Deda Newton route with bar and stem and a Deda Blackstick CF seatpost (wanted to go lighter than the Moots stuff - and cheaper). Same saddle, same wheels (I think - Ksyrium SLs) with red bar tape and red Vittoria Open Corsas).

Thought the colored headset and hubs might be going a little too far.

I don't know, for this build I think the headset and hubs would look great. I don't know if I personally would go with the blue tape and tires though as they are the first items to get grimy. That being said, the Look has a blue cork tape is a little darker than average so it may hold up a bit better.

By the way, Stella Azzurra would fit your blue theme quite nicely, although I'm pretty sure that they are also a little pricey. Anyway, they have cranks, forks, bars, stems, etc.

be careful, bikes look a bit silly when people try to color everything

I think saddle and bar tape is fine--but I would be careful with more

also--remember* it's VERY difficult to match shades. there's nothing worse than a guy whose bike has components with 4 different shades of blue, and his shoes have one shade of blue and the kit a different shade of blue

the one hard rule: only do it if it matches perfectly

Yeah, I was trying to avoid too many shades of blue. Thinking about white bar tape, and white Toupe saddle, but using the blue tires.

Well, I suppose that price is not a big issue for you given the investment in the rest of the bike. Are you in the $400ish range or $800ish range for the wheels?

I ride a Merlin and for 5 years had Rolf Vector Pros on it. Nice fast wheels and I love the hubs. Very smooth. I wanted to get a set of training wheels (my wife wondered why I would put kid's training wheels on my bike - never mind...) and found some Ksyrium Equips last year at close out. Probably paid $230 for the pair. Not as light as the Rolfs and not as fast or easy to spin along with BUT Mavics are much stiffer for climbing and cornering than the reduced spoke Rolfs. They made the whole bike feel much stiffer. Now, I know every one thinks that they want stiff rather than compliant. There are pros and cons to this way of thinking from my point of view.

I would not get caught up into gram counting when you choose the wheels unless you race and race up hill for a living. Go for strong, durable, fixable in a pinch, and moderate to light in the weight department. You can't really go wrong with most Mavic wheels. I have had problems with the durability of Velomax wheels. Rolfs are nice but can be a little expensive these days. High profile aero rims deliver a harsher ride than the Open Pro profile rims.

The upside to a Moots is that you can do some cool things with color. The downside is you can do some pretty uncool things too.

I have a Vamoots and a Psychlo-X. I went with the pink King headset on the Vamoots and ended up with using the Fizik pink saddle and tape as an afterthought. The Moots post and stem round that bike off nicely, but everything else is black. The Psychlo more subdued, the only color is the mango King headset.

If I were doing blue, I'd limit it to a dark blue tape and the blue headset. The Moots post and stem would be nice. I'd avoid combining blue tires and wheels because I think that would make it look like a circus bike. The picture you posted above goes just a bit too far in that direction for me, and mainly that's because of the tires. If you do the hubs, you should certainly skip the tires. I'd go with silver OP rims on blue hubs and the Moots stem/post. Nice balance of gray, silver and a little color.

Are you thinking of a carbon crank or alloy?

I would try to go matte silver/grey with the color scheme.

yeah, that's pretty dang boring though. I did a matte ti serotta concours like that. I'm ordering a new frame and this one will be colorful.

I dunno, to each his own--but I like to have a bike with some character to it. my serotta has absolutely NO character. matte ti frame, silver components and a few black things (saddle, bar tape)--pretty boring.

A high quality bike with nice lines is never boring, and will never go out of style.

I guess, but I own it and I don't like it--what more can be said.
