Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gotta Have It Bike Schwag

This rocket to the top of Titanium Pete's Gotta Have It Bike Schwag list for 2007:

https://www.sidiusa.com/winter.html#a

Check out the 'Toasters' replacement insoles. Heated, wireless remote. I mean fughedaboudit. Just checked them out @ the LBS. Favorable reviews coming in from the beta test racer weenies out of Manhattan.

Warm tootsies will be mine. Oh yes. They will be MINE. As soon as Glenn @ Piermont Bicycle Connection gets my size in stock I mean.

Does anyone know if there's a non-bike weenie specific version of these that's half the price? The beauty part of the Sidi insoles is they're designed to replace the stock insoles in your Sidi shoes. That probably makes them worth whatever inflated bike weenie price tag they carry.

Yes, but with boot warmers, no one will see that they say "Sidi" on them. What's the point in that?

However, it seems the powerpack to support these insoles cost $160.00, for a total cost of $200.00.

That's just the insoles, you still need the powerpacks. Here is another vendor:

But I don't want ugainly/ugly/bulky winter cycling shoes (which don't necessarily work anyway). I want warm toes.

I have more than ample experience riding in sub 50º (and often sub 30º) temps. I do ride all winter. My toes were cold this morning (30 mile ride, 28º temperature). This is a no brainer for me. Cold feet seems to be a somewhat unpredictable phenomena. Very strange. But when your toes get cold, it kind of sucks. I just want something (adustable) to take the edge off. These seem ideal.

I wear Pearl Izumi Amfib booties over regular Sidis with ski socks in cold weather. That usually works. My toes never get so cold I'm ready to bag the ride. But that does appear to be the only weak link in the stay warm chain.

Just as is the case for many other consumer products, these can be had for less.

patencad, I always thought you lived a little closer to me in New Windsor. I guess you live a little closer to the city though.

If you had spent more with chilly toes you'd realize how preposterous the hand wringing over the $300 is. Or maybe my bike weenie brain cells have snuffed out all sense of Reasonable Cost when it comes to anything bicycle related.

I suspect it IS the latter.

Nonetheless, the Sidi Toasters WILL BE MINE.

And of course I'll be posting about them here soon. In the meantime let's hope all your collective toes don't freeze off underneath that saran wrap.

With these Thermics, you can even regulate the heat remotely.
https://www.winterswarmth.com/product...m-ic/liion.htm

Now if they can sew the controls into those $500 PearlIzumi MP3 bibs, you'd have nearly everything you need for a ride, by yourself.

Are those Sidi's waterproof?

Thus, allowing one to leave the rain booties at home?

Allegedly. Trust me when I'm done with them I'll be able to tell you if they're really waterproof or not. I am the Sponge Bob of cycling.

I just buy these. They're good from my experience between about 22-42* F for 3 or so hours.

+1 on this, and those for the hands as well. Just as cslone said, I use these when the temperature hits around 20F and thus far have had good luck. Keep an eye out for sales at REI and Dicks - you can usually pick these up in bulk packs for a good discount.

Take care,
T

I'm in Chester. Several times a year I do a ride that goes through Cornwall (either to the Hudson River lookout on 218 or all the way through past West Point), and that's only a few miles from New Windsor. One of my employees lives in New Windsor, it's about 25 miles each way from her house to the office here.

A good way to freeze your toes right off in really cold weather! Plastic bags = no place for sweat to go = wet foot + cold = colder toes
