Updated mine via the Webupdater, all seems to have gone well. It's reacquiring satellites now to reset the time, etc.

What's the improvement? I only have the 205. Unless the accuracy of the data being uploaded to motionbased.com is improved, I probably won't bother with the upgrade.

Are you happy with your 205? Do you have a separate HR monitor? I have a 205 on the way but I might swap it out even though I have a Polar already.

Not really. The battery life is too short, and it doesn't have an altimeter. You can upload the data to motionbased.com, and it will give you an elevation profile, and elevation gain. Now it you want accurate data, that's another thing. I'm actually in the market for an accurate altimeter, which I cannot get from the 205.

Which is why the 305 has a barimetric altimeter for accurate elevations.

Changes made from version 2.80 to 2.90:

• Corrected problem where Edge could lock up if the track log filled up while the map page was displayed.
• Eliminate possible large jump in elevation value on START button press.
• Fixed problem where unit could store incorrect stopwatch time if powered down while timer was autopaused.
• Changed compass page display to show Distance and Time to Final, rather than to Next when doing a tracback.

That was hard to find...

If they indeed fixed the map lockup problem, that within itself is worth the upgrade. Ive had that happen to me a couple of times as of late.

It's odd that Garmin doesn't list the altimeter function on the 205/305 Comparison page.

which is why I'll never go back to Garmin. $250 that will only track distance. With the inaccuracies of the elevation gain/profile, I highly question the accuracy of any measurements on this piece of brick.

All I'm going to say is that if it is a feature you are that concerned with and a device that you are spending that much money on... one would think you would be sure before you bought one and then ragged on Garmin.

The sad thing is I just talked my roommate into buying a 205 for her sister thinking the HR and cadence were the only differences. She might have liked the altimeter function; not sure how hilly Wisconsin is.

Is barometric that accurate now? I remember the very first barometer-based cyclometers were pretty poor at detecting altitude consistently. Wet weather seemed to really throw them off.

if i let the unit get locked in on the satellites good before starting, i usually get dead on with the elevation gain/loss difference at the end of my rides. if you just slap the edge on your bike, turn it on, hit start & go, then no, you won't get 0 for the elevation difference. i, so far, have found the altimeter to be just fine for my riding. ymmv.

my last ride last Saturday, i had 3581/3582 for elevation gain/loss. i can live with that.

not sure I read your post right, but if you're paying $250 for a 205, you're doing something wrong. that's how much I paid for a new 305

Those bugfixes are huge. Two of my most recurring complaints fixed, if they got it right.

My 205 had an old version of the firmware. 2.50 I believe. So it really needed the upgrade. The 305 had 2.80, I just like to keep them current. The 205 is for the stoker on our tandem. I use a FlightDeck up front. The 305 is for my single bikes.

Nope. If you look at www.performancebike.com, the Edge 205 sells for $269, and the Edge 305 sells for $369. In any event, there's no way you can use a Garmin if you are doing a double century, unless you can finish it in 6 hours (if you do that, you should race in the tour de france).

The Edge batteries are supposed to last 12 hours....still not enough for me to do 200 miles. BTW, the Edge 205 can be on Ebay all day for < $180 and the 305 for < $280.

If you search on the MotionBased boards you will see that there are many posts about using an external battery pack with a USB connector. It will give you more than enough power to do a double century.
