Shimano is coming out with a moldable cycling shoe

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is not even close to being an inexpensive shoe. And I am not sure if the LBS has to buy the heating oven and the pressure pump, or if they can simply lease it from Shimano. Either way, it's a capital outlay to sell one shoe. I don't see many shops doing that, at least from what I've heard so far.

And you will have to get it from your LBS who has the equipment to do the forming of the shoe. So, no Performance/Ebay cheapies for you...

What I was told is that if the shop commits to the buy in, Shimano provides the equipment. The buy in was 10 pair.

They really arent much more expensive than Specialized's high end shoe. I'd buy a pair even tho Im not wild about the colors if they truly do mold that well.

I do think you're right about not finding many places that will stock them, tho, which is unfortunate. Commiting to 10 pair is a pretty big commitment for most small LBSs.

For $500, you can get Rocket 7's, which are going to be a lot lighter, and the CF bed itself is molded to your foot.

Really? My bad. I thought the thread was entitled "Shimano is coming out with a moldable cycling shoe". My mistake.

Looks like the Rocket 7 customs are $850.00. The $450.00 shoe is a stock shoe made from a prebuilt last.

If I was going to spend that much, I'd just pop for custom Simmons anyway.

Mine are coming up on 2 years old. At that time you could get custom for $499. Lousy that the price has gone up that much.

Is it the shoe as a whole or the insole which would comform to the foot? I have never heard of this so I am sure someone will tell me to wake up and smell the coffee but my life does not revolve around cycling and cycling gimmicks and products. I have evil people to put in prison which takes my time.

Interesting however. I just wonder how good it will work?

Mostly its the shoe upper and the insole. The base is carbon, it's not going to mold at all at that low of a temperature.

Sounds like a gimmick to me. Interesting, but not necessary. If you have any semi-stiff leather or faux leather upper (even with some mesh added), all you need are damp, hot towels wrapped around them while they're on your feet. That's how we'd get stiff custom riding boots to "break" properly at the ankle (mold to the ankle and top of the foot). I guess the vacuum could help some, but it's not like you'll have it tight enough that you'd make your feet go numb and get a really exact fit. Also overpriced considering they are made with standard shaped carbon soles and not made to measure. I'd also like to know what you'd do with the oven and other equipment once you've fitted your shoes.

Just employee purchased a pair, list on the Shimano sheet said $350, inner sole and uppers are heat moldable, if your bike shop doesn't have the necessary equipment a lot of ski/superfeet dealers will have the neccessary equipment.
ps Having used the vacuum seal fitting equipment before, I think you'd be surprised how good a seal you can create.

Since your feet swell on long rides, I don't see how this would work well. Nothing worse than toes being cramped after 70 or so miles.

I 'spose you could go for a a ride or run to get your feet puffed up to operational size...or just do the fitting at the end of your work day.

You must be careful with this method of "custom molding". The instructions ask the customer to stand up on the shoe while it is moldable....

Any pathology in the foot gets transferred right to the shoe so additional adjustments may be needed....

If there is foot pathology a neutral shoe is probably better and then add varus or valgus wedges....

The smartest method would be to mold the shoe in a non-weightbearing position with the foot in neutral position then add the necessary correction….

This would get the custom fit around the foot and then add the adjustments for a neutral mid-stance position....
