Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Someone posted this link in another thread.

Seems like the budget mavic aksium's outshine their flagship ksyrium ES's.. And I was about to drop some $$ on a pair of these based on reputation..

Since the conclusion put the Shimano 7801 Carbon 50mm at the top overall, does that translate well down to the original aluminum 7801's???

Err get real...the 50mm rim gives it a huge aero advantage over the std al rim.

But back to the discussion...the Campy Eurus looked to be a very good wheel for a not so deep AL clincher...fairly aero, middle of the road in terms of inertia and good stiffness. Hmm Eurus.....

I have the early Ksyriums from when there was only one model. I have about 6,500 miles on them. I am about 180 lbs. All of the miles were road miles and a few slow dirt roads and a little mud and water. I don't hit much, I hit less things than all the riders I ride with or know. The roads are pretty good here but I have hit a couple of potholes pretty hard.

The front wheel had a very small amount of sideways play about 5,000 miles. It took me 30 seconds to adjust the bearings with the special tool. I did graze a curb sideways with the back wheel, and knock it a little out of true, not much. The wheel was trued and has not changed since about 3,000 miles.

The bladed Ksyrium spokes are expensive, not all places have them, and the minimum order is like 25 ( I think), they are over $10 each. Find a shop that sells and works on those wheels if you get some. The truing is a little special too. The tension is high and needs to be pretty equal, they tell me. I did not try to true them myself. To tighten or loosen a spoke you may need to loosen it enough to put some Locktite on it first and then true the wheel and leave it.

The high end ksyriums with the bladed spokes don't need rim tape. There is no hole in the outside wall of the wheel. No problems and no rim tape for me. If you are comparing wheel weights don't forget to add rim tape to the weight of other wheels, and not the high end Ksyriums. That makes the Ksyriums look a little bit better comparatively.

I had mine first.

"Heavy", cloth rim tape is 14g per wheel!

someone here once said that having your jersey unzipped does more harm to aerodynamics
than any wheel ever could. Is this true? Sounds like it could be

+1 - The results would look a little different with a "miles to spoke break" graph.

I'm not sure. Sounds to me like you could seal it up fine.

So uh what's the consensus here? Aksiums > ES, even though they're heavier?
