Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best shoes for $150

The title says it all, I got $150 to spend on the shoes. So far I am liking the Carnac Helium from competitive cyclist for $129. Anyone got anything else.

Are those the carbon-soled ones? Assuming they fit, great deal.

I know some of the Trek stores had the Nike Lance II for $150ish or so. I like my Adidas Adistar Pro from Performance for around $120.

Make sure you tell the owner of the LBS your just using his inventory to get a size before ordering elsewhere.

I just got some Nike Lance MTB (I ride recessed cleats) off ebay for $130. Seems like a solid shoe.

You can get the outgoing model Specialized S-Works BOA shoe direct from the Specialized website for $130. I just bought them last week from a dealer for the same price. They have many sizes left, but the big thing to watch out for is their european to US sizing conversion is way off. If you know your normal european size, I recommend 0.5 to 1 size above that as they also run small. Just for example, they say a 45.5 is a 12.5 US, when it should be 11.5. Perhaps try on some Specialized shoes somewhere for your size before buying, or find a dealer with the same show at the closeout price.
The BOA strap system is a stunning closure system. Velcro straps and ratchet buckles are archaic in comparison. Plus you get the built in varius wedge and a reputation as a great shoe. Since I haven't actually used them on the bike yet I can't post my own comments, although they have a perfect reputation. My only initial fault is they are made in China. While that doesn't matter on paper, I have found over the past 20 years that all my best footware, from dress shoes to hiking boots and the ones I covet as exceptional footware, have all come from Italy. Those Italians just seem to know how to fit a foot with quality. The worst footware I've had, also like power tools, have ALL come from China. I bet shoe lasts are proprietary designs held in a secret vault by manufacturers, and the Italians just have the best lasts. That being said, China is somewhat capable of making exceptional products so long as the design, specifications, and oversight of the product are closely watched. I've only heard how great the Specialized shoes are so I hope these shoes will live up.

My guess is since Specialized is 49% owned by an asian company (or is that 51%); they didn't have the option of finding an Italian manufacturer to contract with.

I just got these as well, and I'm very happy with them. They seem to have a little wider toebox than my Sidis, which I like. Also like how I can tighten the top ratched so it doesn't slip, but leave the other straps a little looser for comfort.

Consider some new old stock Sidi Geniuses. Sometimes Nashbar has them, or they're on ebay. There were $200 carbons around last month, so the plastics should be around $120?

What kind of foot do you have? what size do you wear? I use carncs and i like them cuz I have a wide foot. so look into the width of the shoe as well as the size. I really like the fit. the only other shoe I have fit in that well is the Nike road shoe. make sure you match the shoe to your pedal system..

Try to find a pair of Specialized Carbon Pros. They are being replaced with a newer, better, faster model (read -- cheaper to produce) and you can find the older model at closeout prices. The most comfortable riding shoe I've ever had on.

I like my Sidi Thetas (mega sized) a lot, but how the shoe fits YOU is one of the biggest factors.
