Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized Roubaix Expert Cranks...

Just bought an 07 Roubaix Expert and it comes with the FSA SL-K carbon cranks. Of course now that I bought the bike I'm doing the detailed research on the bike and have come across a number of reviews and posts that are negative towards the cranks. People are complaining about non-driveside crank bolts backing out and poor shifting. I took the bike out for a test ride and the cranks felt fine to me, shifting was good. The bike is currently sitting at the LBS waiting for it's partner to arrive, my wife's matching Roubaix. I'm wondering if I should see if the LBS will swap the cranks out for the Shimano compacts. I just hate the idea of running into a problem later and then having to spend more money to rectify it.

Anyone have experience with the 07 Specialized bikes with these cranks?? Has the bolt backing out thing been fixed?? I'm less concerned about the shifting because I'm pretty certain that can be cleaned up a bit if there is a problem.

Thanks,
Rich

I have been riding a 2006 Specialized Roubaix Comp for the last year with the same cranks. The key is proper torque on that bolt...have the LBS tighten the hell out of it, and then after your first ride put an 8mm allen in there and make sure it is tight. The torque spec is on the bolt so if you have a torque wrench set it to the proper number (which is pretty high).

I had no issues with mine.

I had that crank on my '06 Roubaix until I upgraded to Dura-ace. I never had a problems with the shifting or with the bolt backing out. Although the self extracting cap did fallout during the first significant ride with the bike, but that's the fault of the LBS for not tightening it enough. I swapped it out for DA primarily because I wanted a 180mm crank and the bling factor.
