January 5 in New England and I rode in shorts
At 61 degrees today, I wore shorts and a long sleeve jersey thinking the wind would be cold, but I was hot. It was 61 ambient, but the wind blowing in was actually warmer. Tomorrow at 65 degrees, its both shorts and short sleeve jersey. Who would have thought I could try out my new Xmas riding shorts a week after.
I'm not sure if I've ever ridden my road bike in January in my life, let alone in all short gear. Jan and Feb are XC ski and snow shoe months. In NY we would normally have 3 feet of snow, and here its usually less snowy by 15 degrees with salt crust, mounds of road sand, snow reduced road shoulders, and huge frost heaves. Not sure if I actually like it. |
Same thing here in Montreal.
It will be raining tomorrow, but I will probably be riding on Sunday. The XC skis are still in storage. No possibilities to XC ski unless I were to drive 2-3 hours up north. Crazy. |
yup same here in ottawa. went for a nice 50k ride yesterday, 9 degrees.

Dare I say.... global warming?

We have all your snow and cold here in Colorado. You can come pick it up anytime :-)

Ha ha Denver!
I spent Oct. & Nov. in Boulder...loved it. You live in a beautiful place, especially for riding. Glad I missed the storm. Hope the roads clear up soon! |

So, I am wondering how ice is melting at these temperatures? Unless it gets above freezing up there, as far as any science I know, this is impossible. BTW...here in the midwest in early December, it was 9 degrees out. Highs were in the low teens. Where'd all this cold air come from? Maybe it's cold someplace else.... |
Currently 59F just north of Boston. Maybe a record high today. A bit drizzly, though.

You know that the earth has gone through regular heating and cooling cycles for millions of years, don't you? It's not a stable system and never has been. Just because you notice the change doesn't mean you can do anything about it (and even if you could, Kyoto isn't the vehicle to address the warming).

[QUOTE=roadwarrior]Somebody told me the polar ice packs were melting. So, I went on to a Canadian weather website and looked as far north as I could and noted that the temps were well below zero. As I recall from my high school science days, freezing is 32 degrees farenheit and zero celsius.
So, I am wondering how ice is melting at these temperatures? Unless it gets above freezing up there, as far as any science I know, this is impossible. [\QUOTE]I Check those temps again in July-Sept and you'll see how the ice caps melt. Regardless when you look at pictures from 100-50 years ago against the current pictures you can clearly see errosion in glaciers all over the planet. Even if you're someone on the fence about global warming it seems to me that the only reasponsible thing to do is to reduce your personal contribution to greenhouse gases. Otherwise, the problem is only going to get worse while your "jury is still out". |
