Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I should be out riding. =(

Well as has been noted in several threads the weather for this time of year is just weird and the riding has been pretty good. Yesterday Machin Shin came up from the Philly area to buy a part from me and I told him if he had time he should bring a bike. So he did and we had time for about 28 miles...could have done more but WOW was it windy...like the gusts had to be near 40 mph and we nearly got blown off the road several times.

Well today is Sunday and for me that means my LBS "early risers ride" which rolls out at 7:30a...I need to roll out of bed at 7:00. So there we are (wife and I) dead asleep last night at 12:30 and some jackass on some sort of motorcycle comes riping up the street. I don't know what this thing was...it was louder and deeper than a Harley (4 stroke?) and it sounded like it had a blow off valve (we have a Borget dealer, does he sell a 4 stroke turboed bike?). Anyway this jackass went buy the house 4 times as full throttle...you could hear the damned thing coming from quite a ways and when it was next to the house..... So anyway it woke both my wife and I on the first pass and after the 4th I got up to see if he was coming back...because I was going to do something. But he didn't...and now I was up. So my wife and I watched TV until like 2:30....no chance in hell of making the early risers ride.

So I look out and it is dead clam...the high winds from yesterday are gone...but so are the high temps, still higher than it should be but at 32° I haven't rushed right out to hop on the bike. Does this mean winter is finally here and I need to look at my cold weather gear again.

I didn't get out yesterday in the warm weather, darn family...

I am going to give it another hour for the black ice to melt then, damn it, I am getting out today...

Still a high of 45 degrees and no snow...

Not bad for Jan. 7...

I have pics of my kids making snowmen in knee deep snow Jan. 6 2006...

Edit...We have ATV's, snowmobiles, and gunshots keeping us up...

Well, at least you got a ride in. It was 71 degrees here in nyc yesterday and I was at work all day. I was thinking about heading out for a spin this morning, but then realized I need to head back into work for another full day at the computer. Off to work I go...

Same here in WNY but it was raining too so I decided to try my trainer out for the first time this year (been bike commuting to work). Planning on a 2-3 hour ride this afternoon.

Yea this weather is kiling me. I have been fighting a flu like cold all week. I still have one of those deep chest painful coughs. I tried riding but I just gave myself a coughing fit.

Sounds like one of those fart-piped Subarus.

I rode in the 65 degree weather yesterday for the first time in a month or so. I picked up a chest old a few months ago and went out for a hard ride - mistake. I morphed into bronchitis, then a sinus infection ... took FOREVER to get over it all.

*how do you people get so sick so often?*

I went out yesterday to round off a 150-mile week .. in January .. in the NE. I was going to do a longish ride today, but got frisky with the wife unit and never made it out.

Tomorrow morning, I spin.

BTW, Echinacea, Vitamin C, L-Lysine and Airborne are your friends ..

Yeah, grasschopper it was pretty nasty out in the burgh yesterday. My wife had to work, so I didn't have the opportunity to get out and ride. Had the kids all day. I did get out this morning for 30 miles, and it was a bit chilly, but no winds. You still have time to get out there for a quick 20 miles or so before dark!

I can relate to your story for sure. I live on a pretty busy road and we have the young punks driving by in the middle of the night like that pretty often. Pisses me off to no end!

I had sort of the opposite problem--I shouldn't have been out riding. I'm still getting over a bit of a cold, but our team's skills and drills clinic on Sundays in the winter is just too valuable to miss. So, armed with some Afrin, Mucinex, and one of those breathe right nasal strips (Voodoo? probably, but hey), I went anyway. Had a great ride and actually won one of the short practice crits! Average temp per my Polar was 54. Not a bad day at all!

We'll see how good of an idea that was sometime tomorrow, I'm thinking...

Managed 77 miles today....damn it was nice out today too! Granted, the high was "only" around 50 or so, but it sure beats 30....

Weenie

I didn't get out today, but after teaching 5 classes last week (2 of them on Friday) and a hilly 50 yesterday, I felt justified in taking a rest day. Those winds were brutal yesterday. A couple of those gusts nearly took my wheels out from under me.

But hey, no snow yet, which means no salty, cinder-covered roads either.
