Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lemond MAILLOT JAUNE- deal or no deal?

Ok, I posted before, and now I have the right name for the frameset I'm considering. It is a 2002 Maillot Jaune Reynolds 853 frame and carbon fork. It has a few thousand (2-3,000) miles on it and looks to be in pretty good shape. Seller wants $80 for it. I'm thinking of one day building it up to a roadie, but should I just wait and buy a whole bike w/ components? It seems like that is usually cheaper. I'm on a tight college student budget and I'm not sure if it would be a good deal once I built it up with decent components, as I've never done a build this nice. Anyway- would you buy it or not?

$80? sure I'd buy it.
Then I'd prob just use it as a beater.
But they're solid frames i think $80 is great.

A 2002 LeMond Maillot Jaune is red and yellow in color. It was their top of the line steel model...

It sold for $3299.99 in 2002 with full Dura-Ace...

If the frame is in good shape it is a good deal...

Unless there is something structurally wrong with it, $80 is a good deal.

Agreed. I see Zurichs and Malliot Jaunes of the same era go for 300 at least on ebay...

You're all talking about a good deal for just the frame and fork, right? No components whatsoever.

Right, so I'm wondering if for relatively cheap I could build up said frame, or if it would be cheaper to get a complete bike off of ebay, even though the frame is a good deal. (component groups seem so expensive to me). I recently saw a 2004 that sold on ebay for $560.00 (ultegra)- I doubt I could build this whole bike for that cheap with ultegra components.

You could flip the bike on eBay and make money at $80. Just buy the thing. What is your budget?

If you are patient and keep your eyes open for more deals you have a great start with an $80 frame...

If you don't want to take the time and effort, look for a complete bike...

What size is it? If it's a 57, I'll give you $100 plus shipping, right now, sight unseen.

See, you just made $20.

If it's a 53 cm, it'll ride like crap. Buy it, send it to me and I'll dispose of it properly.

58 c-c

The more you guys talk, the more I consider buying it and slowly building it up- or flipping it if I change my mind.

Naw, you want to suck up to this mod right here with that frame. You know I have plenty of room (yeah right!) for that frame.

$80 for the frame and fork, grab that quick if its your size. Watch ebay for a lightly used 05 or 06 Campy Centaur or Chorus (or 105 if you go that way) group, a set of XR-1 wheels and a few other bits and pieces and you'll have yourself a screaming nice ride.

Lemonds didn't come in even sizes back then. If they had, 58 would've been my size as the TT is too long on the 59 but just right on the 57.

Why don't you buy this sweet frame for $80 then buy a cheap bike with nice components for $560 and swap the components over to the nice frame. You now have a $640 bike that is infinitely better.

Don't bother asking, just run to the seller before someone else takes it.

May be it is too late already.

Does Lemond measure center to center? I'm 6'1.5" and the frame looks my size, but hard to say. I usually ride a 58 or 59.

Geometry for Maillot Jaune - this was for the '04 but it's the same going back to at least '98.
