Look Pedals

Im looking to get a set of either looks or look style (shimano dura ace/ultegra spd sl). I came across a really good deal on ebay for some 2003 A.5.1 for 20$, no reserve as far as I can tell. I was wondering what the difference was between all the look pedals? is it mostly weight? I looked at the look website and weight seemed to be the only major difference between models. Also, do you think my lbs would let me try out some pedals? Ive never used looks, use spd-r's, so I would like to try them without buying them blindly. LAstly, anyone have these pedals? any problems?

I use DuraAce SPD-SLs... they are fine - people had problems with the first generation cleats, but they are resolved and recalled/replaced now.

Ultegra version is just heavier, but should be just the same in performance.

NOTE... SPR-R and SPD-SL are VERY different... don't get them confused else you might find yourself with pedals you didn't want.

I know SPD-R's are very different from SPD-SL's. Im looking to get rid of my SPD-R's in favor of some looks or spd sl's. Any thoughts on those pedals?

Pretty much the only differences are going to be weight, construction material, and tension adjustability. For 20 bucks, if they are in good shape, thats a good deal.

I ordered a set of Time Impacts today..I can't wait to try them apples out.

they are brand new pedals, in the box. Someone else has bid on them, we'll see if I can win this one.

go for it..When does the bid end?

I just added some brand new Look 357's from Ebay for $65 and they are great. Easy in/out and great area. Best upgrade so far.

I've got some old Shimano imitations of LOOK..I wasn't planning on replacing them, but they are getting real finicky, plus they are heavy. I could get my darn foot out of them the other day and landed square on my knee cap..Now pedaling hurts. I was having a tough time getting started at stop signs today on my SS>

fubar5 you are going to love the Impacts. Did you get the Ti, Mag, S or regular version?

fubar5 04-29-03 06:12 AM

I got the S...All I could afford. The Ti's are sweet though, I wish I could have bought them..They are light!! The the Impact S are around 330 grams, which is a bit lighter than what I've got.

TriDevil - I bought Look A5.1 pedals off of e-bay about a month ago. I've got a couple hundred miles on them so far and think they are great. I switched from SPD pedals to Look. For me the Look system provides a better platform and in general I feel more connected to the bike. I love the adjustable float option, although it took sometime to break in the pedals to the point where I actually noticed a difference. One suggestion, start out with the release tension low until you get used to the new pedal system. Even the lowest tension setting was more resistance than my old pedals provided. I made the mistake of starting out with a high tension and had a minor mishap trying to clip out on my first real ride.:(

Looks are great for roadie stuff. I've tried other pedals, but always come back to Looks. I don't get hotfoot, even on centuries. A good choice, IMHO. As for differences, you get more adjustability and less weight as you go to nicer pedals in their line. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but that's what I noticed when I was shopping for pedals a few months ago. If you ever walk around in your cycling shoes, though, I'd suggest getting some cleat covers. The Look cleats are plastic and will wear faster if you do walk on them much.

I just bought a pair of LOOK 206 pedals and they've been great. This thread mentions weight quite a few times, so I went to

http://www.lookcyclesusa.com/pedals.htm

to compare. I was surprised at the results! Most of the expensive models weight more than the 206 model.

ImprezaDrvr 04-29-03 12:17 PM

True, Rob, but remember that the more expensive pedals offer more adjustability and/or more longevity.
