Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Credibility of Internet Wheelbuilders. Be Very Careful!

Learn to build your own wheelsor be extremely cautious in selecting a wheel builder.
I will avoid any/all future transaction/interaction with www.SUPERSPOKES.com
I ordered a Ultegra-Velocity Fusion-DT Swiss wheelset in early December. I was told that it would "take a couple of days to get the Ultegra hubs so I would not receive my new wheels in time for Christmas" but I was assured delivery during the week after Christmas. It has been over a month since my credit card was charged and still no wheels and no completion/ship date. They will not/do not return phone calls. They will NOT provide urgently requested build status and completionship dates via email.
I do not expect to receive the new wheels at all.
I normally build my own wheels (with great satisfaction) but I was recovering from (October) triple bypass surgery.
Please provide opinions and suggestions for selecting a wheel builder.

Thanks for the heads up. As for the rip off, file a complaint with the bank that issued your credit card. The Better Business Bureau might help also.

Cant adivse you on a wheel builder but Id call your credit card company and dispute the charge. You shouldnt have trouble getting it reversed. Call/email the company and tell them the transaction wasnt fulfilled in a timely fashion and that your done dealing with them.

That's strange. I have ordered from him (Greg?) in the past, and had no problems. I ordered a set of Velocity Uriels in 650c from him. He had to order them, but I still got them within a few weeks. He always was a very nice gentlemen to me, and gave me a fair price on everything I bought from him.

there have been a number of complaints about superspokes on BF over the recent months.
and over in the SSFG forum as well.
the owner of superspokes has responded to a couple complaint posts as well.

their horrible web design would have steered me away immediately.
hope you can resolve this

Good to know about, but sorry to hear you had to learn first hand. If you're looking for another builder, Troy Watson of ligerowheels.com was recommended to me by another BF member. I was hoping to have a set of wheels built this spring for the Gazelle, but looks like those plans are going to be put off till the Fall.

I've bought two sets of wheels from Superspokes.com in the past. I have had great service and received great wheels at a good price from them. I hope you can get this resolved quickly.

Generally I would avoid anyone but Ligero and Mike Garcia. I can also say that John Kovachi has been a top wheel builder in the ATL area for over 15 years.

Moderator's note: I'm not even sure about leaving the email here. I do hope our members are mature enough to not send abusive emails, especially since we only have half the story, and other members have noted that they had a pleasant experience with this company. The OP ordered his wheels from them, and linked to the site in his post. He has their info, and has requested suggestions for another company to build his wheels instead.

Doesn't make sense to lump all internet wheelbuilders in with Superspokes... some are great and some suck, and some have days (or months) that are better than others... like any other company, internet or otherwise.

I don't know anything about SS except that they have a good selection of parts. I've been trying to get ahold of them for the past week regarding parts availability, and they don't return my emails or calls either.

Thank you very much for your responses and suggestions.
I am glad I used a credit card instead of my debit card. I have contacted the credit card customer service and they are sending forms appropriate for disputing the charge.
Since I now have the OK from my cardiologist, I shall gather the components (already have all tools) and build the wheels myself.
I have become very apprehensive about ordering from a company that charges a "restocking/cancellation" fee. I am suspicious that the scam is to take an order (possibly no intention of filling it), perpetrate cancellation by putting the customer off untill cancellation, and collect the "restock/cacellation" fee with no expediture/effort.
TRUST has become obsolete for me.......Please be cautious!

Gary,
When you ordered the wheelset, you were told that Ultegra 6500 hubs are not made anymore, and it was not easy to obtain a set in 32 hole configuration. We had a supplier who could do this, as we stated. We are sorry if there was any mis-understanding, in any way. The holidays is a difficult time to get some items as many suppliers are closed 1 or even two weeks then. We stated that we could have the set to you shortly after the Holidays, which was going to happen. Right about the same time we were taken by Fraud by a group of people for many, many thousands of dollars. We have to closed our site down. This problem has shut down the merchant accounts also until they can resolve the huge mess these people made. We fully intend to refund your money Gary, as our website states. The site closing has been posted on our website for several days, and you were notified by email. Please forgive our delay, as it was a large set of unfortunate circumstances that caused things to happen they way they did. All we wanted was to love, live and enjoy the sport. Thank you for listening. Please email us Gary. Thank you again.

I ordered a set of Reynold's Alta Race rims with a PT SL hub and have been very happy with his work. Prompt, communicates well, etc.

I love these threads. A car forum I'm on gets the same complaints and responses from online shops. Sucks for you, but so entertaining for me to read! (the company responses anyways)

Better try to get it resolved ASAP. This from their front page:

To All Our Fantastic Customers!

We had a wonderful few years. Learned much, and Lost much time with our family's! Even learned how wonderful SOME people can be. We sponsored athletes, races and events. But with our small crew of avid cyclists, and our trying to keep overhead down, its just become too much without making huge commitments that will mean a different life for all of us. We have decided to close down Superspokes.com as of 2 - 01 - 07. All customers with orders in Q will be completed. Please give us a bit of time to complete this. One of the large factors in all of this was a group of customers, for what ever reason, decided to commit fraud against us in a very large amount of money. We enjoyed it while it lasted. If you have any questions, please email us at Gregory@superspokes.com. Take Care, and Happy Trails !!
