Best Budget Roller?

What do you guys think are the best rollers for someone on a budget? I see Nashbar finally relisted their rollers after not having them up for like a month or more.

Whose quality is the best? I assume these bearing are all sealed and non replaceable so once something goes wrong (bearings go bad, rollers warp, ect) these are pretty much trash. How long do these usually last? I never used rollers but I would guess I want smaller diameter for more resistance? Folding is not important. I see performance has replacement belts for their travel trac one. Does nashbar offer belts or Minora? I also heard perfromance rollers are built by TacX I think or some other larger company.

I have the Travel Track rollers and they are smooth and very sturdy, no problems have come up yet. Also being able to fold them is great, they can easily fit in the trunk.

I have had the TravelTrac ones for a few weeks. I like that they are foldable, because I have limited storage. If you don't have that problem, save the $10 and get the Nashbar ones (apart from the folding, they appear to be nearly identical to the TravelTracs). I don't think the cheesy wheel guards on the Minouras are useful, but I could possibly see the styrofoam noise reducers being a good thing (the TravelTracs are kind of noisy).

How loud are rollers? Can you watch TV at a normal volume or do you have to turn it up? Do they make like a constant whirring noise?

Depends on how fast you are spinning them. At lower RPMs (smaller gears/lower cadence), it's okay, but if you crank it up they can get pretty loud.

A lot of it has to do with the room you have them in; a hollow floor will amplify the effect. If you're on a solid floor it is probably not nearly as bad.

One more option and the one I chose....Find a nice set of used Kreitlers. I found mine with killer headwind unit and a fork stand (for the wife) for under $100.00.

You don't need no stinking wheel guards. ;)

I have the cheapo folding performance rollers and they work just fine. Quiet too. My family says they can't hear me even though my exercise room is directly above the living room. My rollers are not on a rubber mat either. Just wood floors....

I have the Minoura and I love it.

I have been looking everywhere for used ones and they never pop up. I tried Ebay, craigslist, here, other bike forums, ect...

Anyway I think I am going to go with the performance ones. They have the ability to fold should I ever need it and their site lists replacement belts so thats easy to find. Thanks everyone.

You got a smoking deal. A quick search shows similar setups way over that with days left on the auction.

Could anyone with the nashbar's take out a set of caliper's and tell me the diameter of the non-threaded part of the roller drum axel? Looks like my PVC tacx are starting to sag a little bit and it's been getting a little bumpier then usual.

The set I purchased locally here had been advertised for almost 6 months on all the local cycling sites. No one was knocking this guys door down. Maybe thats one of the advantages of living in the most physically unfit city in the nation....:)

I got these in November, and overall I'm very satisfied with them, but I must confess that the rubber belt has already started to crack. I'm sure it won't be long before I need a new one. I'm hoping that the next one will last a lot longer than 2 months.

To anyone who has bought the nashbar rollers, how are they and how have they held up?

I also couldn't find the minora or travel trac rollers anywhere. Lame!

+1

superdex 07-23-07 09:35 PM

+1 more on the Travel Track rollers. Bonus: folding them keeps the belt from being stretched when not in use.

ridethecliche 07-23-07 09:43 PM

Where do you get them? I didn't see them on nashbar or performance.

Nashbar's having a pretty decent sale right now and I was thinking of ordering 5 things tomorrow and getting a nice 20% off!
