Proper out of the saddle form?
What is proper form for riding out of the saddle...specifically uphill? Should the nose of the saddle still brush against your thighs or should your weight be further forward? Should your body be in a more upright position rather than leaning forward?
Can someone post a good pic of proper form? |
Watch some bike racing videos and see how the pros do it. The general idea is that you want to square your shoulders and keep your weight centered over the bike. You will be more forward when climbing than on flat roads because the slope of the hill does change your center of gravity. How much you bend over depends on how fast you are going and how tall you are.

When climbing out of the saddle and still on the hoods, I keep my forearms bent at about a 30º angle, and I'm about an inch forward of my saddle, I also point my legs outward so I don't rob power my hitting the saddle, just in case I do. My knees are kinda close to hitting the bars most of the time.
::EDIT:: In response to the post above mine, I mirrored Laurent Fignon's climbing form by watching his races over and over again, I consider him one of the best endurance climbers that I've seen. |
Is there a "correct" form? It should be a natural movement. Grit down, grab the hoods, stand with a bit of forward lean and push like hell. Remember to move the bike around you, not the other way around.
