Wheel building classes?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The spelling Nazi's are going to get you!

I started by reading the info at Sheldon Brown's and other sites; and then picked up the book "The Wheel". No reason why you can't teach yourself by rebuilding an old set or building a new set cheaply. Just take your time and have your LBS perform a once over so it doesn't collapse on you.

Oh yeah...No

I agree. It's something that you can definitely learn yourself. Check out Sheldon's site and "THe Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt. Get an old set of wheels, take them apart and have at it.

I have built 2 wheels now from Sheldon's information. They are still going strong after 1000 miles so far.

I am about to embark on my 5th wheelbuild using Gerd Schraner's "The Art od Wheelbuilding" book. The first 4 sets assmbled with this book's guidance/instruction are performing great after many many touring miles.

I'd say you could need some more than Sheldons information to build a good
set of wheels. Getting a wheel true is easy. Getting even tension's a bit harder.

Check out "The Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt. Don't start out with the
thinnest spokes. They twist and stretch long time before you've reached
the recommended tension and take some experience to work with.

Here's a pic of my 'portable' truing stand

Now I can true wheels while listening to music, having dinner, looking at TV,
having guests..............Yes you name it! The list of opportunities is endless.
