Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Copied from a PM from GGG300, world renowned expert on Compacts as far as I'm concerned.

For the money, the compact is the best option. All you need is a new crank.

The https://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30...ils&sku=CR3253 Ritchey WCS 110 V 170mm 34x50 Octalink crankset will mate with your current BB. That crank has good reviews and is a real contender.

The other option is an integrated bb design. Bang for the Buck cranks in this category are the FSA. FSA Gossamer MegaExo Compact is a bit more grams but a solid choice. https://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30...ils&sku=CR4234

Owners of new shimo version have reported problems having the BB cups included. But other than that the crank has been posting good reviews.

TruVativ has had some poor reviews about the chain rings, but most of it is cosmetic chips.

A triple can give you a lower gear but the cost is much greater. You need the new crank/BB, new chain, new front drl, and to do it right you would also need a new rear drl. If you are only going to do occasional hills then the compact is the best option for the money.

I run a 12-27 with a 50/34 and the 34-27 combo is a low low gear and I have not needed anything more than that.

If you have a local Performance Bike LBS they will price match the cranks and you can save on shipping. If not, go by the LBS store and see if they will do the same.

Last, as you know, TRAIN!!! THAT is a HELL of a RIDE!!!

I went with the Ritchey. BIN new on ebay for less than 180. It replaced a DA 53/39 and went on perfectly. I had to remove two or three chain links but that was simple enough. I put it on for the Brasstown Bald Buster last year and it helped tremendously (even though I still got my aSh handed to me). I liked it so much it's still on the bike.

I think you're talking about the R700. Shimano says it's Ultegra-Level, I believe... but lots of DA-equipped bikes are equipped with it.

There is a FC-R600, debuting for 2007. I believe it's a 105-level equivalent. I have not seen any US shops carry it, much less price it. I have the FSA mentioned above and I am very happy with it.

Edit: Well, aebike has it: Shimano FC-R600 for $114.99. Unfortunately can't buy it over the internet. Nice price. Is it any good?
