I want a bulletproof set of wheels. Help me pick.
I have done tons of research and have narrowed it down, but I want your expertise for my specifics.
I ride a Serotta ti legend and I weigh in at 190 to 200 lbs. I have been riding Mavic Ksyrium SL's which I realy like, but have found them to be quite flexy laterally, and a bit of a stiff ride (I think?). I used to have a set of ultegra/open pros which I rode for thousands of miles with no troubles or turing necessary. I want to have a similar combo again, however I now ride Campy.
I was thinking of ordering one of the following:
DT 240 hubs, DT RR1.1 32 spoke rims, and DT spokes. (probably from excel sports)
Mike Garcias combo with his speedcific hubs, DT RR1.1 32 rims, and DT spokes.
Record hubs with Dt RR1.1 32 rims, and DT spokes.
I think I am also going to try a 12/25 or higher cassette instead of my 11/23 cassette I have right now, to help me spin a little faster up the hills. My cranks are 53/39.
What would you do? How would these be compared to the Ksyriums I have been riding?

I also don't find Mavics flexy and I weigh in around 200lbs. I have run Mavic SL's for over 6000 miles without a problem and only been tweeked (trued) twice. Plus, as clinchers go, they aren't really all that heavy.

Why not Record (or Chorus or even Centaur for that matter?) hubs and Open Pro rims?

Check out the new Record hubs. Nice and light. I have older ones laced to Velocity Areohead rims. No problems.

you're riding a Serotta. Zipp 404's would be appropriate. Clydesdale if you really want bullet proof. Otherwise I wouldn't downgrade from your Kyseriums. Have you considered that it maybe your Ti frame that is flexy?

I've never ridden wheels that were as bombproof as Kysirium ES's or SL's. Or as hard to spell right.

Well the MG wheels would be great...but why the DT swiss spokes? His standard build with the Wheelsmith spokes is great.

I originally wanted to get Record hubs (I like the new black ones) and open pro rims, but I thought I read somewhere that because of the offset of the rear wheel with Campy that the open pros are not a good idea. Of course I can't seem to remember or find where I read that (probably one of the wheelbuilders websites).
Don't the open pros also have the reputation for making strange noises, such as ticking or creaking. Mine would and I spoke to another rider who had the same wheels and he said that was normal, but this was a few years ago???

I have a set of wheels built on Am Classic hubs with DT Swiss R1.1 rims laced 28 2X on the front and 32 3X on the rear drive and 2X on the non-drive. The front spokes are DT Swiss Revolutions and the rear uses Revolutions on the non-drive and DT Swiss Competitions on the drive side. They are rock solid, don't flex and weigh in at 1470 grams.

If you want bomb proof wheels and are not worried about weight then try the Velocity Spartacus wheels. They are paired spoke, and aero, but not light. I somehow broke a poke on a ride halfway thru and rode the remaining 30 miles home that way and the wheel was still basically true. That is what I call bomb proof. By the way, they are not expensive either so you can put that extra money to some light but not bullet proof wheels for racing.

Aren't Lightweight's bulletproof? They've got that kevlar in them and all. Look into those.

I've put a few thousand KM on my open pros/chorus/DT revolution with no issues. I never heard any of the clicking noise and would suspect it's a spoke tension issue.

Your memory of the offset issue relates to any rim that doesn't have an offset spokebed, but it's really not as bad as people make it seem. I think a set of 32h 3x Open Pros will be stronger than a Ritchey or Velocity OCR rim any day. I heard some complaints about the DT 1.1 rims going out of true often, so I'm going to say +1 to the Record/Open Pro suggestions.

Personally I went for cyclocross rims for bombproofedness, but I think pairing Salsa Delgados with Campy Record might be considered a little OCP gauche.

Have you seen Peter White's website on wheel building? See, https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/wheels.asp
The issue of Campagnolo rear hub offset is going to apply equaly to all Campagnolo compatible hubs. Not just the Campagnolo specific hubs. Go with Campagnolo hubs, Velocity Aerohead offset rear rim, 32 spoke 3 cross Wheelsmith spokes and that will be as bullet proof as you are going to get and a nice set of wheels too.
Regards, Anthony

Bullet proof is not a strong enough word..bomb proof might be better.
