Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bicycling Magazine

A long time employee of mine tossed todays mail on my desk. On top was the most recent issue of Bicycling Magazine. He look at me straight faced and asked me if I was now subscribing to "Gay" Magazines? Ouch.

Comments only after you have seen the cover of the March Issue.

Whenever I read the cover stories of Bicycling, I find that it reads more like "Men's Cosmo" than a cycling rag. I already have a "sculpted body" and can also maintain my own bike. Once you get past those articles, there isn't much left to read.

I was really dissapointed when I saw how many epic climbs in CA, were left out of the 100 best climbs feature. I keep my subscription, becuase it's only around $15 a year, not that it's worth it.

Bicycling magazine blows. But saying that here is like telling the floor of the Democratic Convention that Bush is a moron.

You all know these things. But I never thought that anyone would mistake Bicycling magazine for a gay publication. Point well taken. Lycra, buff males. Why not?

This month's Bicycling mag has two available covers, one with a guy on the outside and a girl on the inside, and the other with the locations reversed. It looks like people have been getting the one with the guy on the outside so far. The guy and girl are both showing off their abs. Of course, physical fitness equates to *****exuality.

I have a subscription because it came with my Team Performance membership.

yes bicyling magazine is not very good...but back to the point, maybe he thought he was making a good joke...I would probably laugh if someone did that to me

I'd only be pissed if he was a fat @ss and my company was paying for his health insurance...

Same here, but as I just looked at the cover of my new issue I just realized how gay this months cover looks...Biclyling Magazine isn't helping our image...

If I wanted to see a pic would that make me gay and if I were gay would that be a bad thing. Well, yes in my case it would be bad. It would mean I've been lying to my wife for 27 years. Pic Please.

I actually don't mind the mag - I subscribe. Makes for good bathroom reading

I must admit though, the cover pic does look a lot like a Men’s Helath short. Still not sure what it has to do with riding a bike.

that guy does not have the abs of a cyclist. He's in good shape, but if he was actually a serious enough cyclist to merit being on the cover of a bike mag, I'd say he was pretty fat.

I won't even mention the guy with the huge guns and the 'o' face in that snake oil ad.

not that there's anything wrong with that...

I was actually thinking of starting a thread on this month's cover. It really does show that they are owned by the same publisher as Men's Health. It looks like a Men's Health magazine. The cover mentions something about abs....like every cover of Men's health does.

The guy doesn't even look like a cyclist. Good cyclists don't have that much bulk. Worthless.

Now about the 100 best climbs...or whatever...did you notice that a lot of them were like 0.25 miles or less? Hell I have 10 or 15 "climbs" of that slope that are less than a 1/4 mile within 10 miles of my house. Total fluff.

I usually defend Bicycling, but this issue really sucked.

I really don't know how anyone would think this mag is gay at all.

I think the statement "How to know if he really loves you" might confuse people who are ignorant to the title of the magazine and just see the bare-chested male along with the quote.

So if you have a magazine with a fit male model on the cover, it's supposedly a gay publication.

So if you go with that line of reasoning, then is this a lesbian magazine?

Maybe the most elite cyclists don't resemble the guy on the cover, but there are a lot of guys around here (usually triathletes) that have the same body type as that guy and are very fast (sub 1 hour for 40k TT). I've been to the Ironman in Kona and I've seen plenty of guys at the front of the pack that are built like that. You don't need to be made of twigs to be fast.

And if you ever have a chance to see some elite track cyclists in real life, you'll probably find several of them who are substantially more muscular than that guy on the cover.

Gee, you're accusing some of these folks of reasoning that consider the magazine gay looking - that's a stretch!

Not to mention they went with the weak Southern Nevada climbs when we're riding in Lemond's wheeltracks up here.
