Do Different
I wrote about this in my training blog today and thought it might make an interesting thread here to discuss.
Do Different.
My training diary was on backorder, and it just came in the mail over the weekend. So I had to fill in some of the trainer rides thus far this year.
They also have a spot on the bookmark page of the book where you are supposed to write in your season goal.
I wrote for this year: Do Different.
Coming into my 7th season of road riding this spring, I just feel like it's time to not do the same routine all summer. Do Different....avoid the rut.
How will you avoid the rut this season?
For me that means:
--NOT racing in the same April freeze-fest race I have done the last two years.
--NOT riding the June Ride for the Arts community ride here as my usual 50 miles fast as I can. Instead, I'll convince my wife to ride a shorter route with me and just enjoy the day.
--NOT training on the same 26-mile route day after day.
I'm going to mix it up this season. Maybe enter a new race. Maybe hop on with a club ride or two to ride with strangers that will drop me in a flash. But it will push me to ride harder for sure.
And last but not least, have that BF group ride and BBQ at my place that just never seemed to get done last year. (I actually did have a date for it last fall, but the Northern Illinois chapter had its century ride that day)

My Do Different tasks involve:
* 3000mi annual goal (almost 2x previous years)
* Ride a self-supported century
* get an HRM, and pay attention to it
* a Sprint Tri. Eeek, I just said it.

I only hit 4,000 miles last year, but I was also off the bike for a total of 3 months due to assorted illnesses and injuries. So....I'd like to not get that sick and injured this year.
Oh, and I decided to finally start racing.

Seeing as how I have been off the bike with a strange medical issue I guess I'd have to say that my goal is to salvage the season. Unlike Hip I'd actually wish to keep it the same or better. RAIN ride, at least 6 centuries.
New to my routine this year...

definitely do some group rides with people just a little faster than you. Nice motivation, fun, social, and you may surprise yourself.

i would totally be up for a BFNIC BBQ Ride and Trip up to Hip's county. we should start throwing around some dates and what not over in the regional forum??
as far as my Do Differents go they involve a combination of riding and running. a challenging hilly double, a faster RAIN, and a little 26.2 mile run around the Windy City.
feel better Psimet as we need the El Presidente' at full strength this summer. later.

If you do not mind me asking, what kind of strange medical issues? I have had some in the past also.

Good post Hip!
Last year my goals where:
To stay healthy (I was hurt at the finish of 2005) - Check
Ride at least 3,000 miles - Check (I rode 3,200)
To ride at least three Centuries - Check
To Complete the MS 150 ride faster than in 2005 - Check
Travel to a ride out of my area/region and meet new people (Lancaster, PA) - Check
Start racing time trials - Check
With that said for 2006:
Stay Healthy
Lose at least 15 pounds by the end of April (I went over 200lbs this winter! Ahh!!)
Ride at least 3,500 miles
Do a new organized ride that I've never done before.
Ride at least once a month with the display on my computer covered and not worry about time or distance.
Ride more intervals to help with TT races
Become a better climber.
Help the newer riders in my club improve.

My goals for '07 are
1) Improve my avg on my 40km ride by 4km/h
2) Increase the distance of my weekly long ride.
I know they sort of contradict each other but if I concentrate on getting faster my long ride should be easier with an easy pace.

Do more organized charity type rides...
Actually try to train some instead of just ride...
Find a better/faster group to ride with, hence the point above...
Try not to fall into the same routine of riding always with my wife, I'm not complaining, but we can only motivate each other so much. We need faster people to push us to the next level.

Since then I've been dealing with a job and insurance change. Now I get to call today and start the process over again.
EDIT: forgot another goal for this year...organize the Great Lakes BFNIC Bike Forums jersey buy. I promise...

My goals are to get my stepdaughter and her husband riding bikes. Getting my second granddaughter to give up training wheels.
I am hoping to get a job that I can ride my bicycle to.
Riding with my wife more often.
Riding longer, harder, faster, climbing everything in sight and dropping anybody in my way.
Anybody know where I can get one of those 400 watt thingies?
