Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which one of you was this?

From the news about Discovery's training rides in Slovang, California.

""We've noted that several local riders have tried to tag along on the riders till they get dropped. One unlucky one was cruising alongside and had just been asked to please ride at the rear of the pack when his carbon handlebars bars literally snapped off! While the rider was fine, mechanic Craig Geeter said he looked back and saw the guy kicking his bike on the side of the road – poor form, old boy…""

I can just imagine the roadie on the road as disco pulls up, smiling from ear to ear thinking of the great stories and posts he'll have to relate and then snap...

Lessons: alumanium is good, train more, never tell anyone...

Yeah if Hincapies alumanium sterer broke after his first mild crash in paris roubaix, I wonder what happened to this guys bars, it could have been something minor that weakened them. I NEVER want to crash... but I really don't want to replace $400.00 of carbon fork and bars after a mild fall where they don't "appear" damaged.

At least the dumba$$ didn't crash into the pack and take out Basso for the season with some freak injury...

Funny story, I am in the same area and had the BMC team sneeking up on me 2 sundays ago. By the time I realized who they were I couldn't keep up with them, I followed at good distance until they turned back, I continued straight. Came home and search who they were as I didn't know that BMC has a team, was that Floyd's last year team running under new colors?

No, they are a new US pro continental team sponsored by BMC. Still fast though I assume!

Yeah actually I saw him out here the other day.

Fortunately I had been racing and I could match his speed (while comutting, which, I gotta tell ya, is a lot less glamorous than it sounds).

I just upgraded to carbon bars, and they give a remarkably better ride. (no more vibration channelling through the bars). Makes me wonder how people can use anything else...

"Mild"? To my recollection, his first crash wasn't televised. How do you know it was "mild"?

Well, he was riding and had no scrapes, or torn clothing or huge mud stains so I figured it could'nt have been that bad. Mabey "mild" is not an appropriate word, how 'bout "less than catastrophic" or "only somewhat painfull".

Apples and Oranges.

Aluminum steerer (Hincapie in Paris-Roubaix) vs. Carbon handlebars.

Yeah he saw so many of them that he cranked the dial to 800w and his bars exploded. I understand he yelled 'Training for wussy' at the pack as they rode off. Too bad, since Basso may be excluded from the Tour DA could have shown his massive form and filled his spot

I was supposed to be there filming/editing the training camp for Discovery Channel. Unfortunately I had a wedding to attend over the weekend and couldn't make it. I still may be getting some editing gigs out of this though.

Ya know Vinokurtov is in Solvang right now.....anyone know if he's running carbon bars?
