Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Standard Head Set Compatability

I am newer to cycling than others, and as such, the technical aspects of componentry I admit I am ignorant. I recently read a thread about the downsides of integrated headsets. My 2005 C-Dale CAAD 7 frame uses an FSA Aluminum Integrated headset. I would like to replace it if possible with a more standard Chris King headset. Is this even possible, or because of my frame's construction, I can only replace it with another integrated head set?

Also - are the disadvantages expressed on the Chris King web-site an alarmist article used to drive mis-conceptions on headset design, or is it more and more common knowledge that Integrated Headsets cause more headaches than they are worth.

And if that is the case - could it be said that integrated headsets are only popular because it allows manufacturers to reduce weight, sacrificing frame durability, but hoping that public misinformation will not open the curtains on the integrated headset issues?

Thanks,

VT Biker

I believe that you are stuck with integrated. I would not take the Chris King page all that seriously. They do make headsets, after all. That said, I am not particularly fond of the idea of integrated.

Is there something wrong with your headset? If the bars turn ok, I would just leave it as is.

Well,

I am personally concerned with the idea that my frame literally has a bearing rolling around against the frame. Eventually this is going to wear down the head tube, which is not something I am particularly fond of.

Yes, it works fine now, but eventially, water and grit will get in there.

My IH is a cartrige bearing, yours probably is too as they are cheap and easy to make reasonably well. If that's the case you should be fine if its tight. The cartrige bearing can be thought of as a metal doughnut that touches your frame. If that doughnit isn't moving on your frame there's no wear. There si wear inside that doughnut where the ball bearings are but that won't hurt your frame. Also, you cannot change from an integrated headset.

Yep, what he said. Don't even give it another thought.
