Product Alert! Pearl Izumi Amfib line.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Product Alert! Pearl Izumi Amfib line.

this wasnt sent out by the company but something that happened to me.

i have had the zipper pull on 3 different pearl izumi amfib products snap right off while i was zipping them up. the first was a pair of their amfib booties. i sent the pair back and nashbar was very friendly and help full in setting me up with a replacement. while waiting for it though the zipper pull on my pearl amfib tights snapped off. then after a week or so of using the new booties one of the pullies snapped on those as well!

the product itself is great but pearl should do something about their zippers. i was using them with care after the first one went only to find they are poor quality. thankfully, i have a cure...,.

take a paperclip and insert one end into the slot where the zipper snapped (i will post pics later in thread). twist the paperclip back to normal size and bag! a new zipper pull!

hope this is helpfull

That's odd because I have owned three pairs of Amfib booties and put tremendous torque on the zippers when I zip them much of the time - no problems over the past couple of years. And I wear them half the year, so this is hundreds of uses. Go figure.

+1, patentcad. I've also never had a problem with a PI zipper, AmFib or otherwise.

While it sucks that you're dealing with the problem, I don't think it's quite time to go throwing PI under the bus just yet. I'm sure their customer service will take care of it.

Pearl Izumi is the most durable stuff I own. I have a kodiak jersey thats 3 years old and looks like the day I bought it. I own gloves, booties, both amfib, bib shorts , bib tights, a lot of their stuff. I have never had a zipper problem or any other quality problem for that matter. Law of averages is definitely not on your side on this one. PI gear is top notch!

two amfib tights, 1 pair of booties, amfib jacket, amfib gloves - I'm like a rolling PI billboard... no problems, other than maybe being a little too warm sometimes ... I think you just had a bad string of luck. Amfib products are awesome.

I have a pair of AmFib booties and the stitching came out on the bottom of one bootie! I hand stitched it back together using nylon thread for strength before I can get myself back to the LBS and exchange them. I've only used them 5 or 6 times too. It happened after the 2nd use too.

I've had a similar problem with the stitching coming out on the bottom of the booties. Hand-stitched it back up with several passes so that it won't undo itself again.

I've had problems like this on other lines of clothing - Louis Garneau and Trek as well as PI. I imagine some outfit in the PRC makes everybody's zippers.

my only problem with my pearl stuff was the plastic velcro closure cracking (hookside) on my lobsters.

I have booties that have stitching issue before the first ride. I don't think they are PI. I usually love PI stuff.

The zipper broke off one my booties tonight also. It is PI, bought them in the fall. I've been very pleased. I'll go back to the shop and see if they'll warranty them.

BTW, is the Amfib stuff waterproof? I am thinking of getting a shoe cover, and it would be helpful if it was both warm and waterproof.

yes, maybe not wetsuit quality, BUT if its that wet outside you have other things to worry about other than soggy feet

Nothing is waterproof in cycling. In fact that term makes me want to double over with laughter when it's applied to anything cycling related. But your feet will stay warmer in the wet with Amfib booties. Couldn't ride most of the year in the cold/wet without them.
