Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What rear derailleur is this?

I got some pictures from a guy selling a Schwinn Fastback Sport, but this doesn't look like any Shimano I've seen.

Duh.. I just had to keep going back through the years of the fastback. I assumed it was an 06 or so, as the guy claimed he had ridden it twice. It's actually a 2004, which has pretty janky components. I probably can't go for this one due to the cheap stuff on the bike and the fact that it's a cm or two long in the top tube for me... even at $400 (before I talk him down).

Good point, that's quite a date stamp. This thread deserves a shemale picture but I'm too morally upright to post it myself. That or the OP found his answer really quickly (a realistic possibility).

First, I have no idea what jccaclimber is talking about. Kick the meth, buddy.

Second, if you want to try to date your shimano components, check the imprint on the back of each part. The first letter is the month and the second is the year. A=January, B=February, etc. And, 1976=A, 1977=B, etc. (they started over in the alphabet in 2002 with A).

third, my best guess is that it's an Acera. That type was marketed around then.

The date stamp comment was because the first two posts were 5 minutes apart. The photo comment was because the easiest way to kill a thread is to post that pic of German Andreas/Heidi Krieger or US track cyclist Tammy Thomas. See here:
