E-Motion Rollers - So Cool!

I came across this today:

http://www.insideride.com/index.php?...d=64&Itemid=50

Check out the videos. You can really put in a decent workout on these rollers--probably as good as or better than a trainer.

i swear this is a repost

Or you can make your own for a lot less money. Someone post the link, i can't find it.

Bob_Chase 02-15-07 10:57 AM

How are these different than my Minoura rollers?

bdcheung 02-15-07 10:59 AM

They allow you to stand up/sprint/climb without flying off the front.

He said it came up to about the same price wise. That is, as soon as you include the time investment, the build quality ETC.

I bought some fold up rollers from Nashbar about 10 yrs. ago. I still have them and use them. Cost me about $100.

If you watch the videos you can see that this allows for forward and backward horizontal motion at the base. The little wheels at the front are no biggie. I've seen that before, but the spring loaded base motion is different.

It's new to me. I haven't seen anything about it on BF, but I didn't look either.

derath 02-15-07 11:11 AM

Look for posts from krazyderek. He posts about his all the time.

Personally I get a good enough workout just trying to stay up on my rollers. Someday I will truly get the hang of them.

Ok. Maybe it's not new to anyone else. Apologies all the way around. I'll delete the thread shortly.

NoRacer 02-15-07 11:25 AM

Ok. Well, I can't delete my own thread.

We'll just have to let it die, I guess.

Just kidding. But I do have a serious question. In the thread that was linked here

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...motion+rollers

someone asked can you make it move horizontally too. Well I just got my nashbar rollers and was going to build a free motion assembly. Would there be any added benefit to have a completely free rolling roller that uses swivel casters instead of skateboard wheels? That way it can move in any direction.

bdcheung 02-15-07 12:42 PM

Turbo: that would make no sense. Your bike goes in the direction the front wheel points (unless you're riding on ice), so a 2-axis freemotion assembly would be quite impractical and unrealistic.

More is not always better.

How would you get it to move sideways? The deal with moving forwards and backwards is from the rear wheel of the bike pushing against the roller drums. There's nothing to "push" against in a sideways direction. . .

Turboem1 02-15-07 12:57 PM

if you move or lean sideways perhaps, or rock the bike when you are pedaling? Not really to sure. I just saw it in that thread and thought it was interesting. I guess more is not always better.

The sideways motion kinda gets handled by the fact that you can go left and on the rollers themselves. I could see some sort of sideways motion if your bike were "locked in" maybe.

I can stand up and sprint on regular rollers, most people can with practice

rivalV 02-15-07 05:47 PM

The difference is that you're doing a "roller-style sprint". Your weight is placed in just such a way over the bars so that you don't crash. Quite different from the outdoor-style sprint maximizing pedal power that is possible on the e-Motion roller system.

krazyderek 02-15-07 06:32 PM

I think there's also another BF member who took the time to construct his own set.

I also added bumper wheels and a mag unit, just never made a new video :P
It's wicked, you guys really don't know what you're missing.

My lbs also got a set of the e-motion rollers, it'll be interesting to pop in one day with my bike and compare the real thing to my home brew version. I've seen them in action though when a couple of guys were testing them out a couple weeks ago. They obviously look much better, but also appear to respond a little better to subtle movements, and they have a combo flywheel/adjustable mag unit which looks very sweet.

For $800 I hope it is a good ride!

For some people, who may get snowed in for the winter, like our Canadian friends up north (i.e., like KD), the price of admission may be reasonable.

dno 02-16-07 12:00 PM

I have a set of the emotion rollers (great christmas gift!) -they are fantastic and far and way the best indoor riding experience - sure they are expensive, but for something that is motivating to ride as the ride feel is excellent plus you are able to perform all kinds of workouts - intervals, standing sprints, standing climbs, one legged drills, etc.......very much recommended.
