Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pissed off (bike stolen)

I just closed on a new house yesterday, and I came home to my old place to find that my full Record Merckx Team SE was stolen. I lock it up inside the building's parking garage and the thief cut the damn chains. The weird thing is, my parking spot is in a very very secluded part of the garage and you wouldn't know my bikes were there unless you had seen them before. The other thing is, locked to my Merckx was my Dura-Ace Ridley cross bike and my wife's Bianchi, but those were left untouched.

If anyone happens to see a 2002 Merckx Team SE in blue with full Campy Record 10-speed, please let me know.

My insurance will cover the purchase price of the bike, but I paid a lot less for it than it's worth. Not sure if I am happy about that or not. Looks like I need to look for a new bike.

Sorry to hear about your back luck. Hopefully it will turn up and the thief gets arrested.

Sorry to hear about that, man. Be sure to keep an eye on CraigsList; there are not too many Merckx bikes out there.

I am using my renter's insurance for the bike as I was renting the apartment I am currently living in. I am moving out at the end of the week into the condo that my wife and I bought. The HOI that the lenders want is for the four walls of the unit, not the contents... the building's insurance policy is what they want.

Regarding why I left my bikes in the garage.... believe me, I am as anal about where I put my bike as the rest of you. But where my parking spot is, and the controlled access into the parking area (and out of the parking area) made me believe (falsely) that it was safe in the garage even though I locked it up. The bonus is that my building has cameras over every exit of the building so the thief was definitely caught on tape, now it's just a matter of getting access to it.

every once in a while I'll see a delivery guy on an expensive bike (usually an MTB) and figure there is some guy somewhere telling his friends about the sweet bike he "used to have."

Sorry to hear about it. (You should tell your LBS!)

Report this to the management of the parking structure.

Do I have your permission to throw a bottle in the spokes if I see it on the road?

To me, stealing a bike is a more personal offense than stealing a car. Maybe it's just because I don't have a really nice car, but I feel much more attachment to my bike. A pox upon the thief's house.

Home Owner's Insurance is for the homeowner, hence "home owner's insurance". You're insurance guy is an idiot. HOI covers all possesions of the homeowner. I had a bike stolen when I was in college 20 years ago (A now vintage Casati with full dura ace with the old aero center pull calipers) and my parent's HOI covered the bike. You may have to check your policy because there may be a cap like $1000 or $2000 on a single item and you may have to pay a little extra premium to get full coverage. Also, don't foreget about the deductible.

I hear ya! This was not from my insurance guy. This was from the State of South Carolina Insurance Commissioner. State Farm dropped us for less than $8,000 worth of claims in a two year period for three separate claims. Flood Damage, Lost or Stolen Jewlery, Small Kitchen Fire. I complained to the Insurance Commision formally and they sent me the brochure about how HOI is primarily to protect the lender and the value of the home in the event of damage. I'm just saying that there are all kinds of riders on polcies, but I personally won't go making any claims without a lot of thought into the matter any more.
Respectfully,
DonHaller

Hi All-

Just bumping this back up so fellow riders in the Washington, D.C. area can keep their eyes open. It's not often that I wish for bad things to happen to people, but thieves deserve all our ill-thoughts.
