Is there a way to "train" for high altitude? (Cheaply?)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is there any way to train for the lack of oxygen/thin air at altitude when climbing a mountain if you live in a low altitude area with no mountains? Can wearing a gas/vapor mask when riding make a diff? (i.e. by restricting your air) Is there anything else you can do (aside from buying a $15,000 altitude tent)?

You could move to Colorado like me. I would like to know also for when I move this summer. I'm at 75ft asl here in Houston, and will be at 6,500 in Fort Collins.

If you don't mind swimming as cross-training, you can do it by limiting how often you breathe - every 3,4,5 strokes, e.g.

Same logic applies to the bike. Breathing is optional. No one is holding a gun to your head and making you do it.

This thread covered the topic. Colorado is too expensive. Try moving to Peru's alti plano; it starts at about 9000ft and goes up from there.

Just breathe through a straw when you ride. That's what it feels like at 10,000 ft anyway.

Choke yourself while you're riding. Please record the results for impending hilarity.

They make portable altitude setups.. Ive seen some inline skating guys selling them for as cheap as $500.00.

Its a box with a mask attached to it. Ill see if I can find one of the old ads.

Its something like this:

Get one of these from Home Depot, and get some of the additional HEPA filter attachments to further restrict your breathing. I've actually heard of amatuer cyclists using respirators to restrict their breathing while riding and hill climbing. Apparently it helps naturally increase their red blood cell count. You want a good one that has a quality silicon ribber seal, so it won't ever leak. They only cost about $40 for a good respirator.

Ok, so you'll look like Darth Vader out of for a Sunday ride.
