Zipp 404 or Mavic Ksyrium ES
Well the bike search goes on...came across a Colnago CLX today fitted with Zipp 404's really nice lokking ride with full Record...not sure about the wheelset though from what I have been told they ride great, look great but are they practical for everyday use? The other ride I looked at was a Kuota Kebel also with Record but with Mavic Ksyrium ES. It would be great to get some feedback on these wheelsets and feel free to comment on either ride if it were your choice. Thx

I have the ES's and love them, plus I think they are one of the best looking wheels I've seen. They are nice and stiff and they accelerate very smoothly.

The ES would be a better 'every day' wheel.
However, I'd get some 404s to race on - and train on some box section 32h rims.

I have both; actually I have 303s instead of 404s and use them for all purpose riding with no problems. The 404s are definately faster but the Ksyriums are literally bulletproof. You didn't say what year the 404s had problems with the hubs. You won't go wrong with either though.

If you're gonna get the $1000 mavic ES's, you might as well get the $250 aksiums. That european testing that was done showed the aksiums actually better than the ES's in a whole bunch of categories.
But since you're trying to get the WHOLE bike, I would base it on the frame, not the wheels.

my older 440's (w/ new 404 stickers) have been great so far....they just went on a colder than sh** century today....served me very well...

If your in love with the look of the ES, I'd ask the shop to swap for Fulcrum Racing Ones or Campy Eurus. Both have the wide aero spoke look but are actually aero. The eurus in particular did well in almost every catagory in the latest Tour review. The ES on the other is neither aero nor horizonatlly stiff.

Thanks for the input...I am hoping to get a ride tomorrow on a set of 404's although it will be as cold as the arctic in TO tomorrow so not sure if I will get a good feel for the rims...
