Are we sick??

Right after christmas my wife and I visited our LBS to drop off some wheels and ended up buying matching 07 Roubaix Experts. They had my size in stock and as soon as we saw it we knew we needed to have one. She decided that she would buy me the bike for my 40th birthday and that she'd also get one for herself. Only problem was they didn't have her size in stock so it would need to be ordered. That was ok since my bday wasn't until early March and we didn't want to take the one bike home without the other. So today we returned to the shop to check on the status of her bike and got looking at cyclocross bikes...Any idea where this is going?? We use to mountain bike a lot and basically stopped once we bought our first road bikes (04 Roubaix's) After we got the new bikes my wife decided it was time to sell the MTB's. Her two went quick, but mine are still around. At any rate we thought the cross bikes would be good for the gravel roads, rail trails and doubletrack trail we have around here. Well we looked at a Kona Jake the Snake and of course they had one that fit her and one that should fit me. The Kona was put in the back and we're returning on Tuesday to talk to the owner to work out a price. So in the span of 6 weeks we will have bought 4 bikes. All I can say is thank god for the bonus she got and I'm one lucky guy. If I don't sell my MTB's that will bring me up to 5 bikes and she will have 3.

Cycling a game the whole family can play *lol*

I bought 3 new bicycles (one for me, my wife, my daughter) at my LBS over the past two years. That was $4000, $1200, $350. Then I refitted my Ibis. That was close to $3000. Then an extra set of wheels, $1000.

So, yes we are sick.

And broke.

Punx 02-24-07 10:14 PM

That's cool, biking is very addicting and fun!

OCP baby... OCP!!!!

An illness we love to have. :D :D :D

Punx 02-24-07 10:19 PM

If we are telling what kind of bikes we've bought. All together i don't remeber all my crappy bikes i've had since i was like 5 probably like $150 since 5-10 then $130 for my bmx, $375 for my mountain bike and probably around $400 for my hopefully getting road bike. I'm 13 lol

rbart4506 02-24-07 10:21 PM

I never try to add up the amount we have spent in the 7 years, but I'm sure it's way north of $25000...

Honestly it's worth it. It keeps us out of trouble and gives us something to talk about...

iNewton 02-24-07 10:22 PM

I just love impulse buyers.

Punx 02-24-07 10:22 PM

$25,000 Thats a lot! Wow...i can't imagine spending that much. I probably will though eventually

GamecockTaco 02-24-07 10:27 PM

over the last 12 months, we've bought 10 bikes in my house. My road bike, my wife's road bike, 6 year old's road bike, 8 year old's road bike, my 2nd mountain bike, my 8 year old's mountain bike, my 6 year old's mountain bike, my 3 year old's 16" bike, my 1 year old's trike (1.5 bikes) and a unicycle for the 8 year old (.5 bike).

I don't even wanna think about the total dollar amount as all of the bikes came from the LBS, so no $40 x-mart specials for my kids. :)

Not impulse buyers, we know what we want and the deals have been there. We've yet to buy a bike that we haven't ridden the crap out of. Bought the 04 Roubaix's at the Toronto Bike Show and promptly put 13000km's on them over two years. We know the cross bike will be used around here. It was the MTB's that were being neglected since our riding style had evolved and will continue to evolve.

Reading that post just makes me want to buy another bike.

Nothng else to do in Dundas. Might as well ride...or visit the Big Smoke.

Spending money on bikes is never a problem. Just hope that they create some motivation to put on miles.
Ride.....

+1, It seems to me that the only treatment for the illness you have is to ride as much and as long as possible.

aprilia4life 02-24-07 11:47 PM

The owner of the shop must see dollar signs every time you walk in... :D

I am jealous of your impulse buying and wish I had that kind of money to burn. *Strokes Trek 2100* There there, there there...

Certainly those 13k km made the '04 Roubaix totally unusable and beyond repair. ;)

Helps you lose weight, too.

Nope, but we wanted to go to Compact double and to 10 speed. The 04Roubaix that we have is only 9 speed and a triple. Doing that change to those bikes did not make sense to us since the bikes have the base aluminum/carbon frames and they just weren't worth upgrading. Hence the reason to move up to the Experts and it also got us a much better carbon frame. Not to mention we now have the same bikes as a back-up bikes and trainer bikes. Makes going from one to the other much easier since the geometry is exactly the same.

Really, the reasoning for us to buy the bikes should not matter. The fact is we wanted them and the disposable cash was there, so we bought! We know these suckers will give us a few years of fun before we move onto the next ones.

Life is grand when you set it up to have the extra cash to play!!!

$25,000 is just a number. Whether it's a lot or not depends entirely on what you are compareing.

Park a $25,000 bass boat and trailer in your driveway and you're neighbors won't even notice. In the end, all that it's good for is having fun. If you choose to buy $25,000 worth of bike stuff for having fun, what's the difference?

In the long run it probably won't matter because the health care people are going to get whatever money you have left before you die anyway. I say "Screw 'em!"

I think at some point Im beginning to be a little sick.

caught myself arguing with my hubby about purchasing this rather expensive item, and I caught myself making points as if my whole life depended on this purchase.

Him and I have to start communicating about important things..... bikes.:p

OP: Hey it's your money, I have a very frugal attitude in life and need to learn that not everyone's like that. Sorry for being the party breaker. :D Enjoy the new steads.
