$2K for a new bike---help!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

$2K for a new bike---help!

I have $2,000 that I can spend on a new bike (at least that is what I have convinced my wife). I ride 50 to 100 miles a week, have done one century and anticipate doing one to two centuries a year. I like to ride with my Saturday group and push the pace up a bit. Right now I usually average 15-20 mph on my rides. I'm interested in performance with just a bit of comfort thrown in. I'm 53, 6'4" and weight 245 lbs. I currently ride a 1984 Univega with downtube friction shifters---so anything is going to be a major upgrade. Finding LBS's with large frames to try out has been futile.

I think I have narrowed the search to the following:

Cannondale CAAD9 Optimo 2
Felt F55
Giant TCR AO
Giant OCR AO

Any thoughts or experince with any of these that I can add to my decision making process? Since I got the go ahead that $2K is burning a hole in my pocket.

Of the bikes you've mentioned, I really like my Giant TCR, so I would recommend that. However, the Cannondale riders seem to think those bikes are literally the best bike you could ever buy. I am starting to think they can't all be wrong. Go with either of those two.

I just got a CAAD 9, love it, no complaints! To sum it up, stiff, light, but still comfy enough! I used to ride a steel bike, so I was spoiled by it. I'm not saying the CAAD 9 is as comfy as steel, but the "transition" was not as bad as I thought it would be! I don't think you would regret it!

$2200 and you could own a cervelo soloist team. It gets a lot of praise by owners and it doesn't say "made by a fat union worker in America" on the side. It looks good too...

For the type of riding you describe, I recommend test riding some of the more comfort-oriented road bikes like Giant OCR, Trek Pilot, or Specliazed Roubaix. Also try some of the more racing-oriented bikes. Buy whatever fits you the best. Any bike in the $2000 price range is going to be well made. Focus on getting a good fit. At your weight, you should also look for sturdy wheels. If the stock wheels are too light, ask the shop to switch them for something heavier duty.

I have a Felt 55 that works great for me. You can't really go wrong with any of those bikes. Go try them out and see what feels and looks the best to you.

I just went through this last fall. I spent $150 on a pretty intensive fitting and then got $75 of that back when I bought my bike. The guy taught me a ton of stuff about how I ride and presented me with 3 or 4 options within my $2000 price range and told me what he thought about each bike and the pros and cons of each. Between the new knowledge I gained and the fact that I now have a bike that fits me very well (Giant OCRc2), that was probably the best $75 I spent last year.

Wow I didn't know you people really existed. A real teamster. I'll take this opportunity to tell you and your communist buddies to get out of my country. America is the land of hard workers and cheap laboring mexicans but not lazy union slobs.

I'm part of a team alright, but not union, I happen to be USAF, proud of the USA and things made in it.

In the future, be a little more careful who you call a Communist.

Back to the topic on hand: Motobecane Le Champion SL + Powertap.

You'll probably want to sell the AC 420's (to me).

Giant TCR Composites are regularly <$2000. Incredible bikes for any money. Better at $<2000. And you can always upgrade later.

Fuji's also run in that price range. Matter of fact, I'd go Fuji, then Giant if I were to rank them. Have fun.

Yours isn't the first question in a week like it .. so that groundhog day poster thingy is pretty appropo.

I have a Canny Caad7/Caad8/6-13 ......and they handle great. All TDF proven. I will say that they are more performance oriented and you may want something more relaxed....or not. I would say that no other bike has fit me as well as a canny. You may want invest in a bike fit to narrow down the options a bit.

good luck
