Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling jersey - advantages?

I'm new to road biking, and plan to pick up a road bike in a few weeks, but was wondering about the jersey's I see.

The question: What do they do? For those who use them, how are they? Are they worth it?

I like them. The fabrics breath better and the cuts are more suited for riding than generic athletic tops. The rear pockets alone are worth the price of admission for me. The long zipper is also useful for temperature regulation in the heat.

back pockets for stuff, moisture wicking (not much for me...i sweat like a pig ), a bit of aerodynamics, a zipper for venting as needed

they make you look gay to 90% of the population. The fabric breathes/dries well and you can get jerseys with cereals on them now.

What everyone else said.
Plus they look spiffy and make it easy to personalize what you are wearing. Shorts are shorts (generally black) but jerseys come in all different designs. I tend to own relatively fewer pants in my normal wardrobe and significantly more shirts for the same reason. Likewise in cycling garb.

You're mixing up 'jersey' with 'shorts / bibs'.

The pockets making them an absolute necessity to me, I throw all kind of stuff in them.

They can look horrible if the jersey is too loose fitting. Full pockets then droop like crazy when full.

What they said PLUS . . . you look more colorful and fashionable.
What more is there besides function AND fashion??

Ummmm.... all the above reasons plus I believe they tend to make you a bit more visible on the road... the brighter the better!

I use the jersey back pockets for food like bananas. Without those pockets I seem to get a lot of stares at SAG stops if I put the banana in the front of my shorts

I have a Nike High-vis green (think golf ball) colored jersey that my wife hated until she that the jersey was visible from a long way off. Always a good thing to be seen, the earlier, the better.

try to get full zip, handy especially if you end up getting bibs (very much recommended).

I was wondering why all the looks when I would only wear bibs and nothing else to work.

'cuz the wrestler look went out in the nineties.

seriously, one of my project managers asked me if I was a wrestler when I left the straps hanging over my pants one day.

I wish I could wear my cycling jerseys for everything. Love the moisture wicking and pockets. I find it funny that most things marketed as "activewear" at your average clothing store are 100% cotton.
