It's only a flesh wound!
Crashed tonight on the bottom of the Acosta Bridge at about 25 mph. It was just staaarting to sprinkle and I came down the bridge, hit the brakes for the U-turn at the bottom of the ramp, and bam. Too fast to really react, and I'm glad because if I'd gotten an arm out, I would've probably broken it. I could hear the helmet plastic scraping along the road..odd sound!
The road rash looks worse than it is. I wasn't sure how my shoulder fared; thought it might be broken and had an X-ray this morning just to be safe. It appears I'm bruised but intact. Now if I'd been one of these skinny Hamilton size guys, I'm sure the collarbone woulda snapped like a twig!
Some guy in a van was waiting for the light and presumably saw the whole thing. My calf had cramped up severely when I hit the deck, and I laid there for a few seconds, trying to get it to stop, then lurched up and tried to pick things up and get them out of the road. The guy rolls down his window and asks, "Do you want us to follow you to where you're going?" I said something like "Uhh, I'm not going anywhere right this second!" It was funny even then.
The bike was OK, some scrapes on the shifter and I had to straighten the handlebars and shifters. The Powertap computer flew off and as soon as I got up, I went scrambling around to pick it up. I'm happy to say it still works. Ironically, I just took the hub apart this afternoon and replaced the bearings and one race, set the clearances, and finally got the play out of the hub. Then I crash it.
The other guys came down in a minute or two and after everybody decided we'd had enough, we climbed the bridge one last time and rode the 6 or so miles back to the vehicles. To add to the fun, one guy had 2 flats as we headed back. What a night.

I was riding my training bike, an old steel frame with ancient 105 parts. It's apparently unbreakable; the wheels are still true, the Powertap still works, it didn't even get a flat tire. It has some gnarly looking scratches on the left brifter and the edge of the seat's ripped, that's it.

In Jacksonville, you're lucky that no one steered FOR you while you were on the deck.

FYI...I tried these a month back when I experienced the thrill of a black ice encounter on commute. They apply like Tega or Duoderm, but are thin, strong and go on clear. You can leave them on a lot longer and keep an eye on your wound for signs of infection. They stayed on a lot better for me to. I wore one for a week of daily commutes and training rides before it started to come unstuck a bit at the edge. I replaced it with another for a week. It stayed on and didn't lift at all. By then the rash was healed.
