Buy Iron Horse road bike online- advice?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Buy Iron Horse road bike online- advice?

Hi-I'm new here.
I need a new bike more comfortable on 40+ mile rides than my early 90s cannondale r500. (notorious for a harsh ride, I understand)
I found two Iron Horse road bike options online-Iron Horse Excelsior road comp and road race. comp has 105 components for ~700 and race has ultegra for ~1000. These are running about half the price of similarly equipped Cannondale Synapse alloys that I was initially thinking of buying to replace my bike.
Am I nuts to buy a bike online? The geometries look similar to the cannondale, the price is great, and my bike is so old, I'm bound to find it smoother and enjoy the carbon fork and seatstays, STI levers and assorted component stuff I've been envying.
Or is there a chance I'll just plain hate it? I ride 2-3 days a week all summer, so it's worth it to me to do this right, but I'm a teacher and can't throw money away.
Any advice is appreciated

I had an Iron Horse "Cyclone" with Sora components and it was a very nice bike (sorry I gave it up)!
I have heard good things about the Excelsior. So, with 105 components for 700 I would say that is a good deal! My last bike had all 105 components......very nice, had no problems. I have bought all of my bikes online....zero problems. Where are you buying it from? A bike store or ebay? Do you have the info and pics?

You're looking at $790 with tax and shipping

for another $60 you could have some Ultegra

http://bikesdirect.com/products/moto.../sprint849.htm

It comes in silver, too

I just got a very similiar bike to the one that you are looking at. It is the Iron Horse Victory model with 105 components. I've been very happy with it. Mine was green and white :-)

I got the COMP one last week, still haven't have time to really ride it....

http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.p...8&postcount=60

Don't forget you can also use w228 coupon code. I got that bike for $699 - 10% coupon = $629 + $41 shipping = $670 with no tax for NJ. Also ordered a few other stuff which didn't increase the shipping which is good. This is my first road bike so I'm limited to what I can say about it. Seat seems very uncomfy at first but over all the bike ride smoother than I thought. I'm not used to the bent position yet (vs a more upright position on a mtb). The component quality seems to be pretty darn good for a $670 price point. I'm pretty happy with it for what I spent on it.

The ebay bike IS a deal, and I AM a 54- do you guys know how important it is to have a compact vs. regular crankset? I'm not a great climber, especially early in the season, so I was concerned the excelsior race might be too high geared for me. The Comp has a compact crankset, lower gears.
I'm going to ponder today, and if it's still there, may bid tonight.
Thanks for all your replies!
