sinus infection and race this saturday

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you have a sinus infection you can race and do alright. If it's in your chest at all.... then skip the race. Something else to consider, if you have a lot of drainage fomr the infection, or if there is a lot of mucus in your nose..... I'd skip the race too. It is very easy to get choked up on all that mucus while trying to breath in the race.... then you end up gaging and possibly throwing up while on the bike. This is not an ideal situation (I'm speaking from personal experience on that one )

Neti pot. I use one at the first sign of head cold, and continue to use it, flushing out my sinuses 'til I'm better. Since I started doing that, I've had fewer and fewer head colds. Last one was probably eight months ago. Try it. May not get you well in time for the race, but you may feel better at least.

I had to google Neti pot. It's basically nasal irrigation, which I do too when I am battling sinus congestion. Ask your pharmacist for a 1-oz nasal bulb (usually packaged for infants). Then the isotonic (balanced) saline formula is about 1 tsp sea salt (not iodized salt) per cup of warm water. I tilt my head to the side. I haven't perfected the technique where it flows in one nostril and out the other. I just let it run into my throat and expectorate/spit into sink.

I have had a similar prob last 10 days. I don't get a full-blocked sinus infection, so some doctors stubbornly refuse prescribing antibiotics even though it would help.

But back to your original question, if your infection is not too bad:

1) Afrin - will work in a pinch/emergency, as in a bike race (don't use more than 3 consecutive days).
2) Sudafed (ask your pharmacist for the original/controlled formula, the OTC stuff is crap now) can be taken for several more days.
3) Mucinex -- thins the mucus and makes easier to drain. Can be taken as long as necessary.
4) A breath-right strip is useful also. Avoid antihistamines (Claritin, Benadryl,...) because they dry the nose.
