Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

$444 schwinn varsity cf at walmart

Hi,
I read many threads about the $200 walmart schwinn bike, but I couldn't find one about the $444 one.
It's got a carbon wrapped aluminum frame, 14-speed with sti shifters and appears to be pretty good.
Anyone got any experience with this bike?
Thanks a lot!

Daytonian, I don't like your cat a-blinkin' at me...

Good to know the Varsity is still heavy. maybe they wrap the aluminum in a crunchy carbon shell.

This obviously means aluminum with a big, carbon-fiber print sticker wrapped around it.

Maybe the CF is to hide a crappy paint job.

im all for growing the sport and getting folks to ride YES.. but a bike built up by walmart? i think you could do better going through the net or better yet see the LBS. it may cost alittle more then 440 or so but you get a fit and they will know how to adjust the der and true the wheel exec... i dont think walmart has a wheel smith or a true bench. as for the bike it self.. not an outstanding deal. so im saying pass on a alum frame with carbon wrapping paper plastered to it. MHO.

see ya on the road.. hope the wind is at the back

Maybe not to hide a crappy paint job, but I'd guess that the CF wrap is just cosmetic. Something to let owners say that they have a CF bike.

Probably sell to a lot of folks who don't know any better.

That way, when the poorly welded aluminum cracks, you won't notice right away.

I'm loving the wheels. I wouldn't pay less than $444 for any paired-spoke wheels for fear of explosion.

I'm going to start wrapping chairs and tables with B-grade CF (the only kind consumers can get these days ) and selling it as performance furniture.

No, it's so tommy can get mom and dad to buy him a carbon fiber bike so he can brag to his friends...it's marketing, and it's clever. Shwinn isn't expecting us to buy this bike...

For $444 you can find (on sale) a good Sora-equipped Fuji, Raliegh or (???) even a Schwinn at Performance.

So Walmart crap is actually becoming overpriced.

meanwhile pacific is trying to sell schwinns, gts, & mongooses with top level componentry for thousands of dollars. a higher-end pacific-brand bike is impossible to sell because anyone dropping the cash for a dura-ace machine doesn't want the same name badge as a $400 p.o.s. that you can get at wal-mart. i think they should either go with wal-mart style bikes or go for some sort of trek style business plan. get in or out. you can't be both.
