Ah, shiat! I hate getting beat out on Craigslist.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ah, shiat! I hate getting beat out on Craigslist.

Craigslist does not favor the slow. I thought I was quick. Today I was proven dead wrong.

Craigslist postings show up 15 minutes after getting submitted, so to figure out when an ad first gets posted on the main page just add 15 to the timestamp. This ad was submitted at 4:10 PM and went live on CL at 4:25..

Dura-Ace 8sp STI shifters, f&r derailleurs - $40
Date: 2007-03-04, 4:10PM PST

I have some Shimano Dura-Ace 8 speed STI brake/shift levers for sale, as well at the requisite Dura-Ace rear derailleur and front derailleur to match. I would prefer to sell them as a set, since the shifters only work with the rear derailleur. The rear der has "upgraded" pulley and hanger bolts that are anodized red alloy. There are some scratches on the rear der as well as the shifters, but they are in great working order. Thanks for looking.

Greg
I sent the following email at 4:28, smashing my finger on the mouse button with the speed of a well-trained ninja. In all, three minutes after the ad went online. "Will, you've got this one in the bag," I told myself.

Do you want $40 for the set?
If so, I'll take them! Where are you located?

Thanks,
Will
I received the following email at 4:34, six minutes after sending the email. Total 9 minutes after the ad had appeared on CL.

Sorry!

Just sold them.

Thanks for looking.
Argggg! Who could've beaten me?! Whoooooo?!

I thought I had Craigslist browsing down to an fine art. Why did you fail me, oh fingers? Did I not click 'send' fast enough? Should I have ramped it up to 400 words per minute?

Sigh. I must vow that this will never happen again.

Heck of a bargain. Somebody recently mentioned setting up an RSS feed for Craigslist listings. Any ideas how to do that?

Yes, tell me about that, I missed an opportunity to snatch a free 700c front wheel and this other time, a Rudy Project Ekynox SX brand new with everything, for $40CDN.

RSS FTW!

Seriously, I constantly refresh an RSS feed for CL's bike section. I bought a Specialized mountain bike from a guy that was moving to France the next day and HAD to sell. I gave him $50.00 for it. I replied to the ad 1 minute after it was posted. Dude told me he had 10 replies within the first 10 minutes.

I will be selling a set just like that in 4-6 weeks, without the upgraded pulleys.....really. Don't count on getting them for $40 though. I have the crankset and FD on Ebay right now.

Sweet. Depending on how much, I might be interested. I always loved the Dura-Ace 8-speed STI levers. Damn.

Ah, yeah! I really ought to learn how to use RSS. Never really bothered to figure it out.

I had a time like that when I responded to an ad for a Cycleops Magneto for $25 in the first minute. Guy had his inbox flooded shortly after. One of my better CL snags!

I do think the 8-speed set was the nicest looking of all. Looks like they go for $125'ish on Ebay. I'm hoping to get enough for the whole gruppo to cover most of the SRAM Rival I'm buying.

If you use Thunderbird, you can set the RSS feed up directly into the email client. I think the newest Outlook does it too.. the one shipping with Office 2007.

Seriously.. if you dont set up an RSS for CL, you will lose every decent deal out there. The stuff goes almost instantly if its a crazy, screaming deal.

I'll have to try that sometime. Aren't there some RSS viewers that integrate into Firefox? I switched to using just Gmail's web client - Thunderbird was inexplicably eating up all my memory, and I wasn't willing to go back to Outlook.

In the meantime.. I knew I shouldn't have written "Thanks, Will" in my email! As Lance says.. "every second counts."

Doubt they were actually sold, seller probably changed his mind about selling or decided to ebay them. There wasn't even enough time between listing and "selling" for them to send a paypal request and recieve funds... if there wasn't something fishy going on, you would have gotten a reply along the lines of "Looks like I have a buyer already, but I'll let you know if it falls through..."

I just barely got beat out for a $125 Burley Piccolo on CL the other day. Not too exciting for you road guys, but the Piccolo is discontinued, expensive, and is apparently the only good trail-a-bike.

When I got my current commuter, I missed a lot of good bikes on CL - lots of cheap Volpes and stuff. I nabbed my OCR-T as quickly as possible. It also had no picture, so I think that really hurt the effectiveness of the listing.
