Road Cycling ďIt is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.Ē -- Ernest Hemingway

Cyclism Sunday

did anyone catch the show tonight? Bob Roll looked straight at the camera and declared that the French [unintelligible word] the whole thing up, and that Floyd Landis never took testosterone in his entire career.

In a world of empty talking heads I was really shocked to hear a genuine opinion, and I think I heard some gasps from his colleagues on the show.

As much as I love Bob, he is there for exactly that -- straight shootin', from-the-hip color commentary from someone who was in the trenches. Think Terry Bradshaw. He is also a notorious "homer", so his defense of Floyd is right in character. (I'm not saying that I disagree with him.)

I do not watch the View, but have seen enough clips to know. I am only stating this because I wish Vs would provide more in-depth coverage.

It sounded like "snarged" but clearly the import was that the charge was manufactured. If only Landis didn't have to look at his notes when he said I don't dope by using some illogical way of saying it.

For some reason I remember it as ... "They pranged it up"

Anyway....I'm just glad SOMEONE is covering SOMETHING about my sport on TV. I'll take what I can get.

Don't forget....Wednesday at 3:00 central time...Tour of Qatar show...Sunday we're off and running with the spring classics!

But it's Versus. They have a built in time delay just to cause ire and hair-pulling about "spoilers" on bikeforums.net.

This is an issue with VS and the way they send their listing or guide info to DirecTV. The DVR is thinking these showings are repeats or not even related to the Season Pass you have set up for "Cycling." At least this is my experience. Later.

I enjoyed the show.

Not that itís perfect or couldnít be improved upon, but to have cycling covered on television is exciting enough for me to be happy with the program. Iíve warmed up to Al, always like Paul, and Bob is first rate (go ahead and ditch Robbie: then again, glad Iím not having to suffer through Chris Carmichael).

I really liked Bobís bit on Floyd. I liked how he said his job is to ride his bike and he should have a team of people defending and talking for him. He knows, like the rest of us, that FL blunders his way through interviews.

When he looked at the camera and said, in effect, Floyd is innocent, well damn, it was a bit shocking.

Then Paul chimes in and says to look at that famous stage one more time, that it wasnít so much the efforts of FL, but it miscalculation by the peloton. What did he say, that FL only lead for 12 minutes or something?

Sorry I canít remember the exact quote, but I walked away thinking, hey, maybe Floyd is innocent, which is what I really want to believe.

Paul's point about Floyd's ride on that stage was a good one. It was discussed on this forum as well; it was not so much a superhuman effort as a supersmart one. The up and down terrain lessened the energy saving advantage of the peloton so staying several minutes ahead but essentially riding the same speed was no great disadvantage aero-wise. It allowed him to ride with unfettered support vehicle availability and he got to better use his descending skills to gain time on chasers with less mass or cajones. Having all the other teams completely fall down on the job helped immeasurably too.

I couldn't stand Al when he first started but either he's gotten better or I've become used to him because I think he does a pretty good job now. He's enthusiastic about the sport, he's learned a lot about it, he seems to provide a bit of leadership and organization to the shows and he looks like he's enjoying what he's doing.

Ok so WTF...my DVR missed it and I had gone out to a movie with the family. Anyone remember what it was called in their guide? I have "Bicycling" or "Bicycle Racing" or something on my DTV DVR set to tape all episodes. I did have to manually go in for the ToC but forgot to check this weeks show. Looking forward I am getting a Tour of Quatar that is going to record on Tuesday (check your listings if you didn't know that) and they Paris-Nice for 2 hours on Sunday...so it IS set to record.

Was it called something different? Did my DVR just drop the ball?

Grr

Ah see there it is...I just posted about this above before I read your post. I have it set to record all episodes both new and repeat but for some reason it didn't get it.

Love the DVR...hate the DVR.
