Speedplay replacing X-series?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay replacing X-series?

I've ridden Speedplay X2 pedals for a few years now and love them. Now I've heard from a couple shops that the new Light Action pedal will be replacing the X series altogether. The Light action seems to be essentially an X series pedal with more of a Zero series type cleat. I've never had trouble with the current setup as far as entry/exit. Does anyone have any insight whether this is true and why it might be better? I guess its not that big a deal if the Light Actions work as well, but I still might want to get another set of X2's soon if they're to be discontinued.

I believe that it is true. There are certain advantages to the Zero cleat spring design (can't remember what they are right now....) That the new light action incorporate. Whatever they do I can't see them eliminating the X series all together. It is just too popular. At hte very least you will always be able to get replacement cleats and other replacement parts for the ones you have.

If I had to go buy a pedal tomorrow I would probably try the new light action. Then again thank god I don't have to go buy a pedal tomorrow.

EDIT; This calls for a speedplay pic....

I'm shopping around for a new bike and will probably be getting a new set of pedals with it. I'm tempted to go with the Light Actions, but they're only available right now in the chromoly - not the stainless. $114 vs $170 retail sounds good, too. I never realized the Zero had a different cleat before and just wanted to know if there was an advantage.

The Zeros have adjustable float. From what I can tell the Light Actions are JUST LIKE the X's - they have a fixed amount of float- 15 degrees.

I have no idea why Speedplay would keep the X's around once the LA's get rolled out.

Why fix what's not broken? My question was "what's the advantage of the Light Action design over the X? Why the switch in the first place?" If there is an improvement, I'd like to hear what it is.. I might want to give it a try. I admit its not that big a deal in the grand scheme of life, but its a product that I like and I'm told that its about to be changed.

The Zeros are more tolerant of dirt and crud. The X's can get clogged up with dirt in the wire section of the cleat.

And god I've seen that happen to more than few friends who've stopped on the side of the road.

I'll stick with my quattros thank you very much. I've had the cleats covered in mud and still been able to clip in without a problem.
